Interview Question - When should I follow up?

I just interviewed for a SDR job I really want. I'm on the third round which is a writing assignment. I sent it in one day ago.

My question is when should I follow up on the assignment and what should I say to make myself stand out without overdoing it ?

Relax! If it has only been a day, you are good. if it gets to be 3-4 days after and nothing back, then reach back out.

When did they say you will hear back and what are the next steps?

It’s never a bad idea to email a thank you note and excitement for the role a day or two after each touch point

The next steps is just to meet with the team. I sent one follow up to them after the other two interviews.

Yeah but I haven’t heard back after the assignment, getting worried even though it was a day ago. But maybe I’m just all in my heads about it.

Oh, I can imagine. Not hearing can be alarming. I hope it's just a natural step in the process. Have you been getting feedback along the way?

since its a writing assignment you need to give a few extra days for them to read it i would think.

I would not over think it. Just email saying "I just wanted to confirm you got my assignment response and was curious if there is a timeline on when I should hear back? "

your answer to the assignment will help you stand out not your follow up approach.

Always be closing. It’s very important in a sales interview process and a lot of hiring managers will flat out cut candidates that don’t close an interview and validate next steps. That said, don’t stress, it’s been one day.

Today is Friday. Send a short note at the end of the day. "I hope you have a great weekend, I hope we can continue our discussions early next week" kinda thing.

No concern after a day. It's always best to ensure an expectation is set. Maybe wait til after the weekend.

Don't get in your own head too much

You should have determined that prior to leaving the interview honestly. The trademark of a good sales person is to always plan the next step prior to the meeting ending.

that said, thank you note within 24 hours and a call 2-3 days later if there are no follow up plans discussed during the interview.

So you didn't ask "what's next" after the writing assignment?

If you read the comments above I clearly provided an answer to your question. The next step is to meet with the team.

than why are you here asking about timelines? If its laid out already then any input the Community provides is moot.

I wanted feedback on if I should follow up after the writing assignment. Other people from the community provided a great response. Thanks
