Interview Questions

I have some people scheduled to interview, they will be the first employees I will hire (or not ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚). It is a company where employees will sell ebooks and online courses, where they will receive a commission for each sale completed. What are the questions I can ask? (I have no experience with interviews)

First get to know them, here are a few examples;

How would your colleagues describe you?ย

What motivates you?

Then measure their ambition;

Have you consistently met your sales goals?ย

What are your long-term career goals?

Finally test their skills;

How did you land your most successful sale? ย ย

You need to make your questions because you know your business, the direction, the goal, vision and qualities you want in people who you will potentially hire.ย

My guide:
1. Get to know them a little. Talk about what they enjoy doing, and what gets them out of bed.ย
2. pointed questions about what they perceive is their selling style. How they like to interact with the customer.ย
3. if they are new to full time work, ask them about what they are hoping to achieve. If they are seasoned, ask what kept them at their previous employers, or didnโ€™t.ย
4. be blunt with them. If you know ballpark comp figures, share them. Tell them what they can expect and see if it interests or turns them away. Tell them the parts of the job that others donโ€™t like. Any hiccups you know will happen (bad onboarding training, fluctuation in comp plans). If they can tolerate the ugly, thatโ€™s good. Always be up front.ย

last: always be cautious about personal questions. Let them explain their hobbies and family with an open ended question.ย

go get some talent! Good luck.ย

This x100 there's a bunch of super generic questions out there that you can copy and paste, but to find the best people for your business you need to use your own knowledge.ย

The first good question to ask them is to tell me a little bit about yourself. This shows who they are and how well they can talk and hold a conversation. It also lets you know more about them to see if they are someone you would want working at your company.ย

One thing you should DEFINITELY do is look into your local regulations as far as what you can and cannot ask. Don't get yourself in trouble at this point of company building

There's a bunch of threads here with questions, answers, and experiences. Check the search bar and you'll see what I'm talking about. ๐ŸฆŠ

A few that I likeย
-from your research on this company, tell me what you can about it?
-ask for the old company's value prop
-why are they looking and what are they looking for
-what will they need help with/do they want to be trained or improve on

I recommend asking something about their expectations of you or their managers.ย

1) Make sure they can articulate what your company actually does.ย  If not, you can save yourself time.ย ย

2) Have them tell you their story - get them to sing their song - where they've been and how they ended up interviewing at your company.

3) Ask them to walk you through their process.ย  Whatever is at the start (prospecting, discovery) to negotiation to close.

4) If you get enough interest, I've found it pretty telling to have your top candidates do some kind of presentation w/ Q&A as a final step.ย  It's really surprising how the good candidates will take stand out here once you've seen a bunch.

AS important as your questions are... the questions the candidate asks are even more important.
