Interviewing

Hey all - just got rejected from a company that I had 4 rounds of interviews with, including a mock demo. Was told I wasn't a good fit because I didn't have enough experience in a relevant industry or selling a relevant product. This was particularly frustrating because this is something I'd hoped they would've picked up from my resume or the first interview.

Has this happened to anyone? And how can you better position your experience when trying to pivot industries?

Yeah, that's some horseshit. I let down anywhere from 5-20 people a week, and admittedly, at first, it was hard to give it to people straight sometimes, but that's an awful excuse, especially 4 rounds in - they would've cut you much earlier if that were the case.

Research the company/product, and come up with ways how your experience/personality/skills exclusively apply to it. This may seem basic, but being specific as possible about this is huge. This is also something that you should pitch yourself, rather than wait to be asked about it. Shows initiative as well as confidence that you're able to transition. "At company A, I did this, and while that's different from this at company B, I think I'd excel, as both require X and Y, which I consider to be 2 of my strongest skills." Then provide more examples.

 Things along those lines.

@bigcheese this is great advice, thank you so much. Definitely need to rehearse why x experience is applicable to new y experience, etc

Yeah that's ridiculous. If you weren't experienced in a relevant industry or selling a relevant product that's something that should have been worked out in the initial phone screen

I hate it when you jump through hoops and then they come with a lame excuses why they picked someone else.

This sounds like a fob off for whatever reason, like you said they would have known this from your resume. It sucks but keep plugging away

It absolutely feels like a fob off. I asked the recruiter for more insight, we'll see if she obliges

Sounds like it has nothing to do with you. People really just suck sometimes and fail to recognize the value of peoples time and effort.

What a waste of time. The good news is you saw how they treat their people once employed, so you may have dodged a bullet.
