Interviewing with a poor track record

Hey fam,

Looking for some advice on how to positively address poor performance at my current company when interviewing.

Long story short - I bit off a bit more than I could chew when I joined my current company and performance has taken a major hit (I'm talking <30% quota attainment since being fully ramped). I've been having some great productive chats with my manager for the last few weeks, and we've both sort of come to the conclusion that there are too many factors making things a bad fit for me. She does, however, think I have a ton of potential to have a great career.

I've been on the job search for a couple of weeks now (targeting companies that I feel would be a better fit for me), and have a handful of interviews coming up in the next week or so. I know past performance is going to come up, I'm curious if anyone has been in the same situation and if there's any advice on how to address it.

What makes you want to leave if you know your manager is certainly you could have a great career? Does she mean not at your current company?

Yea, we've been trying to nail down the issues for a few weeks now. between talking with her and with a few mentors, this company just isn't where I should be at this point in my short sales career.

Do you know what kind of company or role would be a good fit at this point in your career?    Have you gotten that kind of advice from your current manager or the mentors you mention?

Easiest way to avoid it not mentioning it unless asked. If you're asked why you leave, pivot their strengths to your old companies weaknesses.

"Your company has shorter/long cycles, higher/lower AV, startup/scale up".

You're not leaving due to performance, you're leaving as you don't believe in the old company.

Sounds like you have a good relationship with manager, ask for reference from them- and the fact you can identify issues early and want to improve makes you a good candidate.
