Intros that make me stop reading

I truly believe that the first 5-7 words on a Linkedin/email first message have 1 unique goal: make the prospect keep reading by letting them know that the approach is personalized and only for them. Some emails might actually include relevant content that unfortunately, I might never end up reading because of the 5-7 firsts words.

These are some of the intros that'd make me stop reading:

  • Hello Mr. Bachman, my name is [X] and I work for...
  • Hi Erlich, thanks for accepting my invite. I hope you're doing well
  • Hi Erlich, did you get a chance to read my last email?
  • Hey Erlich, thanks for accepting my invite. Let me introduce myself first...

What are the reasons that would make you stop readig?

Basically, intros that make me think that the message is for me. How? I think there are several ways to show that. Examples:

- Hey Erlich, just saw you're hiring 2 SDRs in UK and...
- Hey Erlich, Richard downloaded the ebook X and that's how I came across your profile (I like using colleagues' names when possible)

I think at the moment, making people keep reading after the first 5-7 words is such a challenge that even when you're not selling, people think you are. In our company, we have some content collaborations where people love to participate. You can't imagine how hard it is for us to contact with people to let them know we want them to participate. What I do is "hey, **Not a sales inmail** how's it going?..."

Speaking with a recruiter, he said that they have the same problem. Some people will think that message is a sales inmail missing a possible job opportunity.

First, Jian-Yang did you dirty.
Second, Let me introduce myself (puke)

I like the ones that go hard.ย

Hey Bachy, your team has a problem. I have a solution, hell it's such a good solution that almost all your competitors use it, and have removed the issue that this solves. Let's chat.

A small change that is very hard, but goes a long way is doing everything you can to keep the words "I", "me", "my", "our", etc. out of your emails, especially in the opening parts.ย

It's not about you, it's about them!

Compliment something about them or their company that you find interesting. I always try to keep in mind "what inspired me to reach out" when I prospect via email/LinkedIn and I just say it. That gets their attention quicker
