Investment Approach

For someone my age I should be in a 85% stocks/10% bonds/5% play money style portfolio.

I'm considering making that more conservative even though I have 6 months savings in cash on account of commission never being guaranteed. Curious to see how my fellow savages invest and if accounting for a down commission year comes into play when making that decision.

(*all of this is in low cost index etf's of course)

I do 3 buckets: 401k + IRA, Long-term high risk growth (index), short term play money (that I lose almost all the time, so probably should stop)

I do 5% ESPP, 8% 401k with 4% match, and I bought a condo for the real estate.

I go way more aggressive. I'm basically all in stocks via index and mutual funds.

I also own a few rental properties that can help supplement income in the event of a bad quarter/year/whatever. It isn't enough to replace my income, but is enough to help out.

How old are you?

As one of the few investment professionals in the WR Iโ€™d say you should be 0% bonds.

Retail bonds are guaranteed losers in good markets. Stay aggressive (especially in down markets) with your investments until youโ€™re 80!

genuinely curious for you to expand on this, is your view that you have to have x amount of years of experience before you are a "pro"?

This comment thread is out of order on my phone. Is the โ€œgenuinely curiousโ€ฆโ€ question for me or LightingLeader?

As an aside, there is nothing that say you should be 10% in bonds and 5% in cash at age 27. Why do you want to shift more conservative with your model right now?

that was for lightingleader haha! I'll do my best to articulate it. a lot of our income isnt guaranteed year over year so would it make sense to have a larger reserve compared to the regular person to have to tap into given a down year.

My point is no one is a โ€œprofessionalโ€ at anything at 27

Strongly disagree. I am interested in what makes somebody a professional, though! Go onโ€ฆ

I normally like to live off my base and save/ invest the rest into general ETFs. however from my base I max out my 401k and Roth IRA
