Irony is a funny thing.

So I have been job hunting, nothing has closed yet, but very active in the hunt.

My boss has spent the past month putting us through all kinds of sales training and I have been attending, while my coworker has been logging herself on and doing other shit. So she is kicking my ass in sales currently.

This morning I woke up to an email that my numbers are low - 30k needs to be done by the end of the year, our deals are 2k-5k range, so we are talking 6 to maybe 15 deals, literally plenty of time.

Here is the kicker though - if I dont get my sales up by the end of the year my salary will go down.....salary is 15% of previous years closed won. If I did not have a foot out the door already, that comment made me get both arms out the door and now my head.

I am here asking you guys, has anyone heard of a salary going down and retaining employees? Like what a crazy tactic. I get not making bonus. I get being fired for poor performance, but telling someone they are still employed but would be making less - tell me I am not crazy here?

If you agreed to those salary terms you are probably SOL. If not, it might be considered constructive dismissal.

In either case it sounds like unless you want to play fast and loose like your coworker then I'd be looking for work elsewhere.

Definitely could be constructive dismissal. 100% is a load BS.

I haven't seen anything like that outside of like a 1099 situation where it is BoB focused or commission only. I hope something pulls through for you

Ouch. Glad you are already actively looking for your next spot. I've never heard of this before.

It's super rare but it happens. Mostly as a way of getting someone to quit. Look at your employment contract and see if they've given themselves the legal right to do it.

At the end of the day you already know you don't want to be there though so I wouldn't sweat it too much. Just find your new gig and stop showing up at the current one. Let them come to the realization that you quit only after you're long gone.

If they want to play games, play games.

They are quiet firing you. They don't want to go through the hassle of firing, because they might not have a strong enough case. Layoffs look bad. If they decrease your pay due to performance, you'll leave on your own.

Yeah that is what I am feeling happening, BUT it does give me room to focus on my hunt and only bring 50% to the table at my current.

Wow, I've not seen this type of salary structure before. Unless you're at minimum getting a raise that tracks inflation, you're making less no matter what.

I'm not sure what type of sales you do, but this doesn't seem like a great place to be for longterm growth potential (unless you plan to get a promotion within the company or a surge happens in the market/your product demand).

Print marketing - startup - no training until I started to teach myself about a year ago. Hence me halfway out the door, just blown away when I saw her email this morning.

That's rough. I made the conscious choice to go somewhere with enablement and constant training/improvement available to me, along with opportunity for progression.
My previous spot was a year of paying my dues at a shittier company.
Look for somewhere that will empower you, not penalize.

Working on it.

Followup question, do you know anywhere to effectively train myself DevOps?
