"Is $250,000 a life-changing sum of money?"

I saw this question word for word on Twitter and I thought it was a trolling shitpost when I originally stumbled upon it.

The comments, however, were full of valid takes and spirited debate for both why it's life-changing and why it's not.

So here I pose the question to y'all in a more focused demographic.

All takes welcome.

Is $250,000 a life-changing sum of money?

I'd love to throw some back at a wedding w/ the WR crew.

Sounds like a pretty good down deposit for a house - so I would call that life changing

Yeah I’m with you - get some student loans out the way and get me a nice lil starter home. Currently in a 1 bed apt.

ahhhh the one bedroom apartment - I feel you there! It was perfect pre pandemic but now that an office needs to be incorporated into our homes, I could definitely use an extra bedroom or larger living space

I’ve made 250k with commission here in Seattle and unfortunately it doesn’t feel life changing. Maybe if it were a lump sum…

I live in NYC- which is probably comparable COL wise. I don't know anyone who would say 250k isn't life changing. You could take a year off work lol.

Yeah, I mean I think it obviously depends on how much you already make/have, and if it's a lump sum or not. Also, the tax would play a factor too if that was applicable.

I´ve once read in a book that when you reach the 6K net worth monthly you were able to be happy and each % of increase on your net worth is not proportional to the % of happiness you will increase... If you write down things that are really crucial for your happiness... all of them can be reached with 6K net income per month, or that´s what they said and I truly believe can be true.
So maybe with just 72K net worth per year could be enough... everything depend where you live, if you have student loans and all that stuff but I think it´s a pretty good number for a living

I guess it depends how much you have banked, but I don’t see how it couldn’t be unless you’re already liquid 1M+

you could literally throw it in a vanguard fund and have an exceptional jolt to retirement, buy a house, or start a business. thats just 3 basic scenarios and all 3 are life changing

Depends on what you do with it. Invested into income-producing assets, yes. Blown on some cars and holidays, no.

I look at this as a huge shot in the arm for your retirement plan. With interest/growth, every extra 50k or so I save is 2 years I may be able to retire early...

Honestly it’s all about how you can manage and spend/invest it…. $250k won’t seem like a lot if you’re living day to day and blindly spending

You can also invest that amount in to a startup. DoorDash started with $200k funding to kick them off.

depends on what and where you spend it on, you could theroetically by a house for that amount of money and eliminate the single largest expense the majority of americans have, thereby making your requirements for income much less and having more abilities to do what you "want"

Would take me from not able to realistically think about buying a house to potentially buying a house. I’d probably live in Montana or somewhere bleh to make that happen but whatever

IMO I see it as life-changing since it would increase the lifestyle of my family and bring forward many plans we have like renovating our hours. What remains can be used for an investment property for the kids or emergency fund.

It’s an amount thst could change your life depending on your situation. It could be the difference on a down payment or a big chunk out of mortgage which in turn would reduce one of your main expenses. It could also be the beginning of a nice retirement savings portfolio if someone had nothing. It’s not lottery money but I can buy that it would change your life for the better.

If this is 250k tax free then yes. Take that and invest it all in the market, thats an extra 20k a year and then growing / making you more.

Further paying down student debt or any major loans someone has taken out.

I'm not saying it changes your overall lifestyle or allows you to life outside your means, but certainly can give you some short term financial stability.

If anyone revisits this, my coworker and I just did the math and with $250k, you could fill a 20x40 ft. inground swimming pool with Coors Light and have 1000 gallons left over.

The optionality all would get from $250,000, who have never had $250,000 is exceptionally bountiful.

- Down Payment
- Living expenses
- Education/Apprenticeship
- Start a business
- Nest Egg
- Travel
- Etc...

All of that and much more (even all the above listed) possible with that. It's relative, yes, at $100,000 total comp, 2.5 years in an instant is tremendous.  Even at $250,000 total comp, that's a year...
