Is 9-5 a thing of the past?

Sales is a numbers game. For Individual Contributors - You either are are below, at or above your number. It's not about the hours, but the dollars.

So with that, is the typical work day not applicable? What do you think?

I think sales people should have the freedom to work whenever we want. None of your business it I’m picking up my dry cleaning, then going to liquor store pick up some nice bottles of wine and then maybe grabbing lunch - so long as the time is ultimately put in and the numbers are there it shouldn’t matter what I am doing.

If you're hitting your number, it shouldn't matter.

That’s why it should matter. When you’re hitting your numbers then keep going and hit bigger ones don’t stop just cuz you hit a certain mark in minimal time.

That time slot is just a structure to keep our success optimized and it constantly sharpens our skills. Dammit I work 830-530 I might be in the wrong chat 🤭

I've done a lot of work with customers in India. Being in PST, the time difference is not ideal to work when they do.

Unpopular opinion. I love working from 8-5:30 pm.

I get to have a morning to myself, gym after work, and a nice dinner with my fiance M-F.

Provides enough time to hit my number and get away from work to have a life.

Separating work and personal life is critical for me as well. I think WFH makes the 8-530 lifestyle a bit more challenging, but is important to compartmentalize for the sake of both my loved ones and myself.

All about having a life. That's the fun of being an AE - you can drop it since they don't owe you anything just as much as they don't owe you anything.

I would kill for a consistent start time, but servicing clients across the US and dealing a lot of cross border co selling means a lot of 4:30 alarms. Worth it in the end, but it leads to inconsistent days. Today I had my first call at 5. Took 2 hours to myself around 10-12.

Work whenever you want just hit your numbers - that's my motto. Freedom is one of the biggest reasons I love sales. We are running our own business and should be left to work whatever hours are necessary. Sometimes I pull a 12 hour day, others a 4. The needs of customers change daily so you gotta be flexible.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
Nah- I actually prefer to do work at night. I don't think I've ever worked a normal 9-5 since being promoted to AE and it's getting close to a decade now.

In some ways, I agree. However, there is no better buying signal than a prospect that invites you to their office.

If someone can work 12-4 and still shows up for meetings and makes quota, what should it matter? Leave salespeople to work on their own terms and intervene only when their output is slipping.

Absolutely, the idea that work only occurs between those hours is silly. But like others have said if you are on your number or KPI you do what you need to do.

Totally archaic to work 8 hours a day.

If you can do it in 8 hours you can do it in 6.

Indeed its a past metric now! but that being said, flexibility in sales is something you deserve ; be it late work hours or small hours, the game always has been the same, for few years now!

There are days when I work from 9am to 9pm (like today) and there are days when I go hang with buddies (like tomorrow). As long as the numbers are good, no one seems to care.

Yep. I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately as I consider new opportunities. I currently have a very flexible job as far as working hours. I started to worry about how to find another job like that - wondering if it was something I needed to confirm during the interview process. But honestly, you’re hired to do a job. As long as you do it, it shouldn’t matter “when.” Hit your goals and make your team meetings.

I mean was 9-5 ever a thing for a salesmen? Yes, many companies let you do whatever you want assuming you hit goal, but I always try to exceed and get those commission multipliers. But that just might be me, as a single guy in his mid 20's
