Is a Ring Light Over the Top?

I have seen from older posts some people are saying the Ring Lights are a must for WFH. I am thinking about getting one since I just moved into a new place where my office doesn't have any windows and the lighting is pretty bad. I feel I look like an evil villain from a movie with the lighting going on right now!!

I am thinking about getting one, but I know I will get roasted by everyone who sees it.

Is this something you company will expense also for those who have it?

I got a cheap one at Walmart that I use for a darker area in my house. Works nicely.

Yes. get it. I think about it this way, I dont want anyone to have a problem seeing me or hearing me. If ether of those things happen they are distractions and hurt my ability to connect with the prospect.

If you have weird shadows on your face, or the sound sucks or your camera isnt clear, its a distraction and a quick fix.

get your company to expense it, they are not expensive.

It helps. I got one as a gift and I use it whenever I am on cam or as a reading light hah

If I were to get a ring light, one of my kids would commandeer it.

-- not a bad solution for a poorly lit room, but possibly over the top. I can't imagine you wouldn't be able to expense it.

I use one. My office has weird shadows so it helps me not have weird shadows on my face.

I use mine for every meeting - it just makes you look a lot better and avoids shadows that can make you look tired.

No need for anything fancy.

Ring light, good webcam or DSLR + mic= impressed clients over zoom. I look way better on zoom than I do in real life, thanks to a good set-up, and my voice sounds so crisp I just wish I could whisper sign that shit before EOD, please".

There are ring lights that let you adjust the light tone + intensity.
I just bought one for myself and I keep it at almost dim, warm yellow color. Works like charm. :)

You can probably achieve okay lighting using a desktop lamp pointed at you, but it might hurt your eyes. Ring lights are extra, but they have different settings so they won't blind you.

Do you have a window near you? Then you probably don't need it. But for early or late calls it can help a lot.

The ones who joke you on it are also the ones that look like fools on calls with funky shadows and bad lighting. Most companies will expense that item if you show the value of it. Never hurts to ask a manager

I use the Logitech Litra Glow. Doesnโ€™t give you that ring in your eyes and it makes a huge difference for me. Especially if I choose to use a background

Key light or ring light really makes a difference in the professionalism of your video calls. I got a key light from Elgato and itโ€™s awesome.

No one is going to know so it's really just up to how judgmental you'll be towards yourself for having one.

I don't have a ring light but I do have a small lamp I make sure to turn on during the winter months, otherwise the shadows from my window make me look like a Sith Lord. It looks so much better I'd probably get a ring light or similar if the lamp stopped working.
