Is it greener on the other side? SDR to AE?

Being an SDR is draining.

Honestly I jumped into sales to chase after the money which means to become in AE.

Before I was an SDR I was doing more AE/AM work where I was managing accounts/quote/onboarding/demo which didnt feel as draining, plus we had SDRs sending me some of the leads while I do some hunting myself. Although it wasnt in SaaS.

Before that I was in security/IT for a decent amount of my career which I do find myself missing that kind of work.

I miss not having to talk to people honestly lol.

Wait it out to become an AE?

You make way more money as an AE plus the job is way more challenging/interesting so yes, definitely greener on the other side. SDR is the most monotonous and boring job you can have in the industry. Wait it out if you want to stay in sales. If you donโ€™t want to talk to people anymore, explore other opps because thatโ€™s not an option in this game lol.ย

Lol yea i get it. I wish I found the company i am in now first instead of spending over 1 year as a BDR at my previous company. Had to start over at a new company.ย

If you enjoyed IT/security then why not try to find a role in that sector that makes you happy? They pay far more than they used to for IT/security pros with business acumen.

Do you have a path to becoming an AE at your current company?ย  ย  Any kind of general timeline?ย ย

Yea there is a pathway roughly about 12 to 18 months. Just sucks because I had to start over as a SDR at this current company.ย

I like being an AE because I'm talking to people who actually want to talk to me. SDR is tough because you're only talking to people who don't want to talk to you

Iโ€™m an AE and it is greener I wonโ€™t lie but thereโ€™s times where I miss the less stressful BDR role.ย

By greener, you're not just talking about the money right?

wasn't even going for the pun, traditionally yes you make more as an AE, my comment was more aimed at less tedious work of cold calling and more so being creative with selling tactics and strstegy.

i've seen some impressive professional SDRs. And when you do it well for a small enterprise team, then they'll treat you great

but AE = money generation = power

If you miss not having to talk to people you probably wont fair any better as an AE where you will talk to people all day. I talk to my teammates, prospects, customers, partners, and VAR's all day.ย

Sales is ALWAYS a grind. Itโ€™s always going to be painful, stressful. Youโ€™ll always feel behind, catching up, nervous, etc. but there are few other jobs you can make brain surgeon money without 27 years of school. You are either in, or not long term.
