Is it pointless to go to a household name/big brand SaaS company later on in your sales career?

I always hear people say that you get in at the Salesforce, Google, and Oracles of the world out of college to build your career and then get out. How about if you started off at startups and then later on in your career, realize that you want the brand name on your resume?

Does it become kind of pointless when you are in your 30s and kind of five years into the world of SaaS sales?

I'm curious to hear from others with long tenure about this. I started big name, then startup and I could see myself going big brand later on. I have a good friend that hopped around jobs every few years until her late 40s and did very well but ended up at a big name in an AM/upsell role. It's cush, high base and low stress (AKA what I will want at some point...)

I figured this would be the way to go about doing it. I'm looking for the more tenured people to respond as well.

There are no rules. That's the beauty. Sales is sales. No one is "better" than the other.

There's nothing pointless about making that kind of decision. If you and your family are happy, that's all that matters.

It wouldn't be pointless at all. If you want to go work there and maybe close out your career at a big name company, go for it. There are great benefits and there are many positives to working at an established company with a big logo behind you. You can use it as a stepping stone at any stage of your career, too. Do what you want!

Wait - this is not "later" in your sales career. 5 years in is nothing. In your 30s is still young. Still plenty of time to secure that logo on your resume and have it provide benefits to you now and downroad.

Really depends on what you want - you gotta do you. And as @Sunbunny31said, this isn't late in your career!

I'd think it depends on the goals you hold down the road? What type of companies do you want to work at afterwards?

im really confused on why it would be pointless?

if you have been in start ups your whole career you might THRIVE in an org that is really established and has many successful processes to get deals done.

the way your career advances can be different in a start up vs big name org too. in start up land its a little all over the place sometimes. in the big org thins are more structured and more defined

You go to wherever pays you. The name brand is always good. Getting the name brand earlier just helps land the roles you want and accelerates things.

Curious if anyone here is at a big brand right now, I am at a smaller-medium brand company and am constantly eyeing the big dogs. Definitely wondering if it is one of the “grass is always greener” things though.

Not really pros and cons to both. The typical or stereotype of working for a big name company is better work life balance compared to a start up, which I can see being more important the older you get
