Is it sketchy when a recruiter won't tell you the name of the company they're recruiting for?

Had this happen to me and a buddy recently. Two different recruiters wouldn't tell us the names of the company they were recruiting for during the initial phone interview when we both asked the question directly. Is this normal? Should I steer clear?

It's normal. Annoying, but normal.

Sometimes the company will ask the recruiter to keep it confidential in early stages, especially if they're going to be terminating an existing employee and looking for a replacement. Sometimes the recruiter won't disclose because they don't want potential candidates to go apply to the company directly.

Usually they'll give the name once you've passed initial screening/interview and will ask you to sign something saying you'll keep it private and that your candidacy is now being handled through the recruitment agency.

Yes and no. Depends if it's easy for you to go directly and apply since most recruiters are paid for filled positions. If you're uncomfortable with the process, I'd just not continue moving forward.

I've gotten hired that way. Just run if the recruiter isn't straightforward with you on the first call/interview.

I wouldn't take a call without that basic info so it's a bit of a risky move by the recruiter
