Is it unrealistic to "blacklist" certain companies due to the layoffs in the last 6 months?

Just today I saw LinkedIn laid off a ton of employees. I also rememebr when they laid off my friend in April 2020 even though he hit presidents club, but they just slashed 90% of Talent Solutions department. Salesforce also has had a ton.

I have a recruiter who keeps reaching out to me from there but I just have such a bad taste in my mouth from all these seemingly short sighted layoffs. Is it unrealistic to write off working for these companies? Is this just the way that sales roles are and I should just get over it?

I wouldn't blacklist a company that did layoffs

I would blacklist a company who handled layoffs poorly and blamed sales for every issue the company has faced the past year

Fair. I think to me its not just that they do layoffs. I understand sometimes companies have to make that decision. Its more the matter at how swift they are with it. Like covid just started and before waiting to see how things would unfold they just fired a crap ton of people. Meanwhile Microsoft, their parent, had an incredibly profitable year. Idk it just feels short sighted to me. Maybe im being naive though and every company will do this shit

Covid was a crazy time, the stock/value of a lot of companies got cut in half. People had no idea what to expect. I wouldnt blacklist, maybe just ask direct questions to your friend and everyone you met with to talk it through.

Agree. Also, let's blacklist the companies famous for doing layoffs constantly, regardless of how they handle the layoff. That specific action shows poor organizational business management.

That’s SF 🙈 besides the reported layoff in Jan, we had monthly layoffs up until April 🤡

Is it just low performers or are good people getting axed too?

Who would they blame instead? Themselves? Don't be silly, they would never blame themselves 😉

I'm of the opinion that it's almost always worth it to talk to a recruiter to find out what's on offer. You can ask point blank about recent layoffs if you'd like, if only to find out what they're saying about it.

Personally, I only blacklist companies that have been unethical. Like Kosta mentioned, if they blamed sales for issues or handled layoffs poorly, that's also unfair and I'd avoid. If you blacklisted all companies who have ever had layoffs, you've shortened your list of available employers, perhaps unnecessarily. However, you do you. If you really don't like a company due to previous treatment of employees, certainly it makes sense for you to not consider them as an employer.

Right, doesn’t cost anything to have a conversation. Perhaps it’s even an opportunity to ask some tough questions of them.

For me it depends on how they conducted their layoffs. Not out of any emotional desire for revenge or whatever, but because I don't want to be part of a dysfunctional organization. I now charge a premium for dysfunction.

I maybe wouldn't buy from those companies. I would do some heavy research and soul searching before working for them, but I would definitely sell to them.

"Things are tough all over Ponyboy" said Cherry Valance.

Publicly-held companies answer to shareholders, shareholders are driving layoffs.

People work at those companies and if there is a manager there you get on with and a decent comp plan, might make sense to jump in.

Your prospects will read about the layoffs, and might have an opinion.

I've had a SF recruiter come after me every other week or so. After how poorly it looked during the layoffs, it looked even worse when he reached out the next week. I'd never imagine wanting to work for a company like that under current leadership.

I wouldn't fully blacklist em tbh, as who knows you might need one of em one day when looking to get hired and these bad guys may have their doors open for you ,if it was hard to find an opportunity with others.
I would just take em off my priority list of the top companies I want to join.

I would not consider blacklisting them. There are so many reason for layoffs - restructuring, closing part of the business etc etc. I’ll be cautious though and doing my homework before making the decision

No, a job is a job. If you make good sales and close things, you won’t have a problem. As companies grow, more people get added to regions/territories and others get cut as sales/growth goes down. Also, a ton of over hiring over the past couple of years that needs to be right sized.

I would be more likely to blacklist if the staff were treated poorly and the layoffs done horribly.

I use Indeed and Zip Recruiter, I get a ton of emails about open jobs, especially on Indeed-I have honestly never been able to get a job through LinkedIn-they did, however, permanently restrict my account in March saying I violated the user agreement.

I’m with you. I also despise these companies that have no long term view and treat employees as cannon fodder.
I find it hard to work at my best knowing that I can be made redundant due to forces beyond my control.

Blacklist the ones who do their employees dirty by not paying them commissions due, paying them absolute minimum severance, and/or layoff right before someone’s shares vest.

I blacklist them and I even keep track of those who have misbehaved. There are companies that have an empty seat in their sales team for a 3-4 people territory All the Time! That's how quickly they burn through people. As I like to say, I'd rather clean the streets than work for one of those.

As someone who got laid off, no, it isn't unrealistic. My own personal (+ friends and colleagues) has led to certain few companies being added to the NEVER AGAIN list.

I don't think blacklisting them is the right move. Remember, sometimes a new VP comes in and completely changes a sales program. But I'd be wary. At the end of the day, sales drives revenue, so be the best at driving revenue go to whoever is going to pay you the most for your skillset, and leave when the time comes.
