Is Oracle that bad?

Would be curious to hear people’s experience working there. Why does it have such a bad rep? Why do people stay there so long if it’s truly awful? Would you recommend working there early in your sales career?

I worked there.
It has a bad rep because the majority of sales reps aren't killing it and it's a massive company with a shit ton of internal headache. For example, you often find yourself prospecting into an account that has 10 other Oracle reps prospecting into that account selling different products since they divide their teams by product set. They have like a hundred products. So basically you're going to be competing with other sales reps at Oracle for the same prospect. It's a nightmare.

The pay is also subpar compared to other large tech companies unless you're a beast of a rep. People stay long because the job security is great. You can miss quota forever there without getting fired and it's a fun environment in terms of making friends with people your age. I'd recommend working there as an SDR simply because of the marketability you will have on your resume and the training itself is actually quality. You definitely learn good baseline techniques. I wouldn't bet on staying there too long as it's definitely a churn and burn type of place. But who knows, some people do stay there long and kill it.

Interesting share. I have two AEs who came from Oracle and I've never heard anyone sell the way they do, for better or worse.

Having to compete against your own flock sounds like a nightmare. Do you know if that's the case at NetSuite too?

I don't think it's the case for Netsuite from what I've heard. However, the chain of command is annoying there too. An SDR might have an AE and field rep both fighting for credit over a deal when it closes. And then it becomes political and you'll have to request you all be put on the deal

I'm good friends with a senior level sales manager who worked at Oracle for a few years. He loved it as it really built his career up working the Sports and Entertainment sector of the business (became a senior manager there I believe). I think he was fairly high up as he basically got free tickets to any sports stadium whenever he wanted. I tried naming stadiums (like 10 professional across sports - NHL, MLB, NFL, MLS), and he'd been to them all and could tell me who he saw play and what the score was --- he had a really great memory as well! Which leads to my next point below on why he probably didn't stay long term (hard to brush off).

Though he really loved his job and could take his kids and wife to any game virtually at any time, he eventually left to join a startup because: his boss was a dick. The guy would call him on Sundays and yell at him, expecting everyone to be at his call no matter when, where or what. I don't know if this is reflective of Oracle overall, because I think it happens in a lot of places, but it would definitely make me think twice about working there, or at least staying there long term to get higher up in the org.

The other anecdote I have is when I was first working at a startup, we were going around the 10 - 15 new hires in the room who were a mix of folks from Marketing, R&D, CS, and Sales. The HR person asked the usual questions...where did you come from, etc?

After about the 3rd or fourth person you kind of heard these repeated answers, "I used to work at Oracle," or "My company got bought by Oracle, and unfortunately, we were let go." It was at least half of the folks there by the time everyone had finished intro'ing themselves.

The thing with Oracle is there is "Oracle-Oracle," and then there is the complex universe of the GBUs. The Global Business Units are a lot of misfit toys that just can't be fully assimilated into the Oracle-Borg. So they exist happily as these Oracle-not-Oracle entities. Your B-card says Oracle; you get the cache but don't slog around with the bus of reps cross-selling core Oracle. I think these sales roles at the GBUs are a bit of a hidden sweet spot to work there. Looks for roles in these BU's:

Oracle Financial Services Software: Provides IT solutions to the banking industry. This includes software products for core banking, universal lending, and risk management.
Oracle Health Sciences: Offers software solutions for the healthcare and life sciences industry, aiding in clinical research and healthcare data management.
Oracle Hospitality: Provides technology solutions for the hospitality industry, including point-of-sale, property management, mobile, distribution, and loyalty platforms.
Oracle Utilities: Delivers applications for utility companies, including solutions for customer care, meter data management, and analytics.
Oracle Retail: Provides a complete, open, and integrated suite of business applications, server, and storage solutions that are engineered to work together to optimize every aspect of retailers' businesses.
Oracle Communications: Offers integrated communications and cloud solutions for Service Providers and Enterprises.
Oracle Construction and Engineering: Delivers a comprehensive cloud-based project control and execution platform that manages all phases of engineering and construction projects.
Oracle Food and Beverage: Provides point-of-sale (POS) software for the food and beverage industry.
Oracle Insurance: Offers a complete end-to-end solution of software and services for the insurance industry.

And many more!
