Is social selling dead?

The posts du jour on GrindrforBusiness...errm Linkedin often rotate around some new hot fad in sales. I.e. not the phone, not knocking, not even emailing...but some panacea.

The methodology I've gotten the least traction with to date is social selling. I definitely do my research and DD but have never had much traction with social selling.

Is linkedin still the hotness for this, or is it just a wasteland of recruiters and sales reps, and the ivory tower types bashing us for social validation?

Really depends on what your target buyer persona is. While LinkedIn would like us all to believe folks on are it engaging with content all day, the reality is most folks in IT, finance, Ops, etc use LI when they are looking for a job.ย

Agreed, c-suite and other DMs use it to post updates for the business. Sometimes you get a CMO who's more involved. When I've had engagement, it's usually because someone actually said to message them through LinkedIn messaging in their bio.

Iโ€™ve never been a great โ€˜social sellerโ€™ either.

When I hear social selling, I donโ€™t only think LinkedIn but I also think industry networking events, corporate golf tournaments... and basically any opportunity you would have to shmooze your prospect outside of the formal sales process.

I feel like if you have the personality for it, it could be effective but it certainly can feel like a pretty transparent ruse which is why I think it requires a soft touch to pull it off.

This is more dependent on your industry. Regardless of that, if you are leading with value props and useful content, the sales keep coming your way

I think a great way to social sell is from an outbound marketing sense.ย  Hopefully your company shares good content that you can re-share to your network....However, this only works if you have built out your network with connections from a lot of decision makers in your space...It will not work if you network is all your buddies and current/past co-workers....If you build your network right by connecting with the right people, sharing content on their feed can generate leads.
