Is the grass really greener?

Is the grass really greener joining a "big name"? The FAANGs, salesforces, paypals, twitters, etc....

Been interviewing for a couple of big tech/saas players and i really wonder how much better it is, or are reps there just drinking the kool aid and gloating over everything else.

When i ask about their sales/rep problems, it's really all the same shit everywhere - reps dont get leads, reps don't understand the technical side of things, reps have to grind it out prospecting, org issues, turnover, etc etc.

For those who have had experience working for a smaller/mid company and then a big tech company, was the grass really greener? The most obvious benefit is having that shiny logo on your resume, but besides that, given a lateral move, was it really that much better?

For context im at a mid size saas company, currently killing it in my patch, we have the same "problems" as any other large tech sales force, so wondering how much greener it can be on the other side.

I'd rarely suggest leaving a successful midsize for a giant, especially considering you're happy there.

I've worked at small, medium, and big orgs. Medium (in my opinion) is best for sales. You get the growth of small with the resources of big.

As long as you're comp is fair I'd stay put.

Has your current company IPOd?

I worked for a small company that got acquired by a company now considered a giant. I spent years there, as the company shifted its product focus and became huge. There are definitely parts of the experience I miss, but I didn’t miss the constant annual changes to the go to market, departmental shifts, territory changes, no uptick in OTE, and the fact that in a company with a lot of reps, whole teams not making their number is no great shakes.
Smaller company now, and my contribution is valued, my OTE is higher, and club isn’t reserved for a select few.

Too much corporate BS in larger companies from my experience. If you’re happy where you are, refocus and keep crushing it.
Is there scope for promotion for you?

Job security sure, but the competitive landscape is bonkers and the larger those boys get the closer they are to anti-trust laws.

I'd be happy with a mid-size on the verge of IPO or acquisition and riding those flips to the next one.

Facts. More politics inside and out.

Riding the flips is great strategy to stack some cash and equity

There’s def some Kool aid and reps that have tenure there likely have great territories and all that jazz. Grass is typically greenest where you water it though.

The benefit of a large company is that you don't have to spend a ton of time introducing your company and proving you don't work out of your parents basement.  Instant recognition is VERY nice to have and its a big selling point (ie no one ever go fired for buying <IBM, CISCO, AT&T, etc...>

The big guys have their own problems though and so if you're happy where you're at - stay.

Thanks for your insight. Truth. My mid size company still has a major brand problem.

Some things that are better at bigger companies (sometimes)

-More resources (like having a dedicated team to handle RFP responses, this is so nice)

-Brand Name can help in the initial parts of conversations

- Future advancement ( sometimes larger companies have a more defined career path/ will help you land a better job in the future)
