Is the job market still this rough?

The Startup I'm at sadly looks like it may go under within the year. It's not really the orgs fault, it's just our industry is being hit hard with everything going on politically and economically. I'll try to stick it out till the end as I truly enjoy the company and people. However being the practical person I am, I'm starting to put out job applications for AM roles I'm completely qualified for and I'm getting pretty quickly rejected. Have had colleagues, and GPT help me optimize my resume and I'm optimizing for every role but goddamn it's defeating to be brushed aside so quickly. I figured with 14 years under my belt I'd be a lot better off right now.

A bit of a rant but seeing if anyone else is having success out there? What job boards are people using to apply? I'm on Welcome to the Jungle and Linkedin but seeing what's out there for Tech.

Thanks my friends - at the end of the day I hope these words of wisdom guide you: "if you're packin' you're never lackin'." May we all find comfort in that.

Yeah it’s not great. Especially remote jobs, they all have hundreds of people applying to each one.

I haven't looked but this is absolutely the impression I have.

Times are tough, sadly.

yeah it seems to be what I'm seeing too. I know there are layoffs going on but I still seem to see people on LI with new jobs every day. Maybe luck of the draw?

Yes.
Even worse in Canada.
For every 3 people unemployed, there's only 1 available job.

I’m just going to take credit for this in advance. I really think you 2 would get along. Couple of pros.

Even though things might look tough. All you need is one break. So keep applying, keep getting rejected, keep interacting with people. Something will turn up. You'll see.

It's rough. I ended up going back to a company that laid me off back in 2022. Unfortunately only a part time role at $25 an hour plus commission.

What's happening to me is I'm getting in front of hiring managers via cold outreach and networking, but not getting anywhere once that happens. My conclusion is there are just too many candidates with better resumes than I and that's why I'm not actually getting interviews and offers.

Seems to be really competitive out there man. Even when times were ok I still felt like a few resumes out there would at least get a screening. It's a bit wild right now. I definitely want off Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

From the time I started working in "real" jobs post college (which is almost 15 years now) if I got to an interview, I had a 50/50 shot at getting an offer. I've had 17 interviews since October 2023 and none of them resulted in an offer. Even the "bad" jobs that I was only going to take to have some money coming in. For most of 2024 I was driving for Uber.

Tough time right now, looking at industries outside of the norm may be the best bet if money is a need right away. I am seeing an up tick in postings and old colleagues getting new positions. Who knows after march though

If it can be of any help, we've built this job auto-apply tool that helps you tailor your resume for each position you're applying to and make sure it's ATS-compliant, increasing your chances of landing an interview. It's not a bot that spams companies; it just uses the information provided in your resume to make a strong case for why you'd be a great fit for the role.
Happy to share it with you if that’s something that would interest you.

I'm also passively looking right now, and those jobs that I just apply to via a portal have gone no where.
Had plenty of success reaching out through former coworkers etc when it came to getting into the process (but haven't found the right spot yet to jump ship for).

economic unrest along with a large pool of qualified applicants is likely causing this to be difficult.

Yes, it's still terrible, and now I've been out long enough people are deciding that's a reason not to hire, regardless of circumstance. Good luck. I'm now waiting tables.
