Is your business industry specific?

I feel like sometimes I do not know what industry I should reach out to. I work in technology so we literally sell to everyone.

So is your business industry specific? If not, how do you determine what industry to reach out to daily?

Do you have a schedule of what day you reach out to a specific industry, or do you just go by a zip code and hit whatever industry is in that zip code?

Also, what has been the industry that you have been most successful in selling to??

Nothing specific - sometimes I reach out by industry to make my prospecting easier that day but most of the time unless there is some industry wide mandate, I’ll reach out to anyone.

We have an ICP that we definitely click best with (B2B SaaS), but we have customers from B2C fashion all the way to Education and Non-profit teams.

Mine can be even more nuanced than that. I specialize in construction in the nyc area, but many specialize in a particular trade within that niche as well - say electricians or plumbers or MWBEs. I think eventually people in my role should know all the trades but many look to specialize early in their career so they really understand every aspect of what their clients do.

So we sell to everyone. We click with everyone. For me personally, I like working with Healthcare because of my previous background in Healthcare. Sometimes I even like the challenge of Government deals. Sometimes 😆

My services are not specific to any one industry however, there are definitely different use cases that apply to certain vertical markets. When prospecting, I find it useful to group vertical markets so my talk track is similar. I do not schedule outreach by day, though.

My team was split into 6 industries/verticals so we all stay in those industries. I sell into Aerospace & Defense and its been great! Great network connections and the market is so saturated with the legacy tool that prospects have been very motivated to move away from that tool to ours.

I'd also pay attention to current events and see whos getting $$ to spend on brand spankin' new technology

We are industry specific (sell software to restaurants) so that really limits the windows when we can reach decision makers. There are 2 hour windows in the morning and afternoon where we have the highest opportunity to reach people. Because of this we work a named book of business across the whole country so we arent tied to specific time zones.

That being said, I have worked in a field that is not industry specific so I had to know who I was reaching out to and the best time to reach them. Ie home services first thing in the AM before they start their jobs, restaurants mid AM and mid PM etc. Point being be thoughtful about what you prospect is doing when you reach out and align your call times to when they are doing admin type work.

When I had a territory that was very large, I broke it down by zip code or municipality and call in each industry in that area I was targeting consecutively. So start with finance first, then healthcare next, etc. That helped me breakout my conversations based on industry so I could be more focused on the needs of just healthcare for an hour or two then shift to the next.

Gotta know your business' ICP. That really dictates who you target.

Your ICP customer (being is software) will likely be a variety of businesses when talking niche - so it's a good way to find your ICP then run different marketing campaigns by those niches.
