Is your goal to become a VP of sales or stay an individual contributor?

Something I often think about ๐Ÿค”. Not sure if Iโ€™d want to deal with managing people but then again if the money and security is there and Iโ€™m able to be creative I can see myself doing it.

VP of Sales
I have done both, managed and built a team (in the past at a few different companies), was and still is an IC, and decided to start my side biz recently. I prefer being an IC and having the side biz. When I was a VP/Manager I had no life it felt like, meetings after meetings, people complaining, and the list goes on. As an IC, I control my day, I control my commissions, and with the side biz popping it's $$$$$! Oh, and as an IC I was still able to keep the "VP" title ;)ย

I knew I wanted to lead a team as soon as I knew there were teams to lead, that being said I moved up WAY to fast, should have spent a few more years as an IC before moving into leadership.ย

VP of sales at some point I'll feel saturated with being an individual contributor.

This is something I've been thinking about lately.ย

There's no written rule stating you have to move up. Get that Boomer shizz out of your head. Do what makes you happy and keeps you passionate.ย

I like having the freedom of being an IC. The extra paperwork and constant spreadsheets the VPs deal with gives me anxiety.ย

My manager is $250+
Director is $350+
Sales VP is $500+
Sales President is over $1M
Iโ€™ve been aiming for that manager spot... though Iโ€™m not sure. Iโ€™ve done that before (not in sales) and really didnโ€™t like managing the people. Granted, I was managing people in the $15-$20 range, not six figure earners. Not sure how different it would be.ย
Still thinking about it.

Manage others or manage yourself. Each has its pros and cons.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
All about the IC role. The ability to put my phone down and not have to worry is golden. The delta between IC money and what the manager role would pay would have to be reallllly big for me to entertain that.

Depends on your goals, the league you wanna play in and the impact you want to create.ย
As an IC, your impact is always limited to what you can close. Thats very different from running a business as a VP.ย

No rule that you have to go up, but completely depends on what you want.

For me, I want to run a business, go up the ladder and keep going up. My personal goal is to see if I can run a $B business in 10 years.ย
