Is your manager a good coach?

I recently heard a statistic that said 80% of managers think they are excellent coaches, but only 17% of sales people received any coaching from their manager in the last 30 days.

I want to know your experience.

Does your manager actually coach and help you

OR

do they just track KPIs and CRM entries?

Do you think your manager is a good sales coach?

Two of my last three managers have been excellent collaborators/coaches, and the other wasn’t a bad manager either, just not as imaginative. I’ve been lucky!

I am glad you had a few good ones. They are not as common as I wish they were.

Thanks. I've only had one I really didn't like because he was, among other things, just very cold and distant and was one of the people responsible for wrecking the company's culture. Mass departures and failures under his watch. I'm watching the downward spiral of his career from a distance right now and wishing I was a better person so I wouldn't secretly be glad about it.

That’s interesting and I’m not surprised to see that spread. I’ve only had a few gems that could actually offer good advice and overall helped me enhance skills. I one worked for a douche that would build like 1,000 spreadsheets every week with all sorts of metrics and that was his entire job. 🤭 I thought to myself, aren’t all of these reports automated at this point…like why are you here?

Sales Rep
17% is super low, I would understand for more senior reps the manager is more of a level of support. Either to use as a change agent to set a new meeting or fight for them to get approvals

Even with senior reps there should be more to learn. No matter how great an athlete is they still need coaching and tweaking

My mngr is a good coach for internal processes but that’s about it.

At that point I am hesitant to say they are a good coach. A good manager should teach you enough to be successful at any company, not just your own.

Coaching is a totally different skill set, and many in the sales world do not have it.

I have had great managers who were good coaches as well. The more you ask the more you get.

Thank sweet baby Jesus for my current boss being not only a great coach, but an even better support system. I never question her having my back. Refreshing AF.

From my most recent manager to older ones (also from best to worst lol)
1. Really supportive and will always provide good insights.
2. Amazing sales rep that was promoted to manager. Good tips, but still have to learn as a manager
3. Micromanager that would ONLY look at KPIs

Great question, Ginger. Unfortunately, I am not surprised that most chose “...just tracking KPIs.” We need more posts like this... Do you mind if I share this on my LinkedIn?

It’s hard to coach and mentor once you get past a certain number of direct reports. Today I’m an IC but I was a SM previously and WOW was it hard to effectively coach once I had 10+ direct reports. SO much to keep track of in my head since I was also working on projects and sitting in on meetings with marketing ect.

I get that, but that sounds like a direct problem with team structure and an organizational misunderstanding about what sales managers should be doing. Sales managers should not be there to create reports, they should be there to grow revenue.

meh, my manager is a mixture of a micromanager at times and then can be a decent coach. inconsistent.

Mine wasn't a good 'sales' coach. But he was a decent coach. He knew how to keep folks motivated, even when he knew nothing of sales.
