I've actually had to cut off a call because of that. I was reviewing an account plan with a colleague, and I kept hearing a low-flying plane. That isn't entirely unusual, as we have a gen aviation airport about 2 miles away. But they kept circling, and I finally turned around, saw a big plume of smoke and realized I was hearing the CalFire spotter plane. Blurted out, sorry dude, gotta go see what's up, CalFire is overhead...

Oh - but I was also on the phone with a guy in LA many years ago who did suddenly blurt out “oh wait! We’re having an earthquake!” and proceed to crawl under his desk. He stayed on the line, however.

It is funny what you take for granted. Also funny story: many years ago I used to work at a bar in a touristy area. Following the major 89 earthquake, almost everyone coming through would ask about it, but one couple was memorable. They were nice, from the Midwest (which tracks) and had just been wondering out loud what an earthquake would actually feel like. Nature obliged with a small but noticeable quake, which enabled me to look at them totally deadpan and say “just like that” before heading off with an order.
Going to prison. Hit me back in 3-5 years.
