at a past company i had a CEO go on a big rant about functionality on a demo that we 100% DID NOT have. he promised we would build it and put it int he contract.......we never built the functionality and had to refund the customer over $250K.......

We had a guy, Duncan, that would find accounts with 6-7 figure deals that would be closing in the next quarter. He would open an opportunity under that account, for the one, very specific, product that he sold.

Next, he would go into the large deal opportunity and change the notes to make it look like the customer had initially expressed interest in the product that HE sold. By our org's rules of engagement, that meant the deal was technically his.

He sniped many large deals at the last minute from reps and as a result would always hit his number.

After a small deal was taken from me, I created a widget in the CRM to show real-time and historical changes made to all opps in my pipeline. One day, I see this widget start populating with information from the largest deal I was working. Duncan was snooping around in my deal and changing/updating fields, adding in things to notes and emails.

I full sprint to my manager's office and drag him to my desk. He looks at my screen for a minute and goes "Hmmmmmmmm....", before he walks over to our CRO's office. I come in the next day and all people can talk about is about how security had been brought up to our floor to fire Duncan and escort him out of the building.

That's fucking CRAFTY.

And sneaky as hell on Duncan's part. Can't believe he pulled it off multiple times.

How does this happen multiple times? Those large deals should be getting scrutiny all up and down the chain. And how does the rep who has been working this not notice that their own notes have been adjusted? This seems crazy to me.

That’s what I’m wondering!! Like there’d have to be complaints and it’d be pretty obvious what/who the common denominator is…

Last year there was a new director who I didn’t report to who wasn’t doing well in the territory. I had a few legacy deals in her territory that were still mine per our rules of engagement. Nutcase went on an internal smear campaign and tried to talk shit to our CRO/CEO to get me off the accounts, as well as about 75 other people at our company.

Fast forward 1 year later, she eventually got fired and I was poached. We ended up at the same company. Our company is massive, and we ended up in the same territory. Not only that, but I’m an Account lead & she’s one of my overlay product specialist reps, so she technically has to answer to me. Small fucking world

I provided this “Consultant from Russia” the entire infrastructure and workflow for my company. He said he was just curious and asked when our next update was. Weird thing is today……..

Similar to @Beans here I had CRO/CEO tag team move deals to won for their board meetings and then I'd move them back and they'd give me shit...and I'd point out I don't have any ink or new money.....eventually I just told them to pay me out on the Commish from the magically won deal and quarter bonus it hit me and they did and I shut the hell up now.

Pay me and I quiet the hell down as long as it's just rich white dudes hurting each other.

A previous CEO who is now dead caused the entire company to collapse because he basically committed identity theft and was a total fraud and duped a bunch of us.

A guy, came to the meeting every 2-3 months saying he is super interested, took the demo and everything then emails project is on hold. He did this for an entire year. Seemed very shady, why do you need a demo every 2-3 months?

I was working a deal with our local partner in India. We we're in his car driving and I asked him why he had an inordinate amount of amazon gift cards with him. Long story short..in India Amazon gift cards are the currency for bribes.

Oh shit I’ve got one here. Still tell this story on interviews as an example for why you always need more pipe coverage than you think.

Y2 carrying a bag. Big software company.

Gov’t client who bought big last year and sent me to club is looking at an upsell. We’ve been in pretty regular comms with them, have a good idea of what they need.

First month of their Q4, my SE builds a custom demo for them. Still one of the best I’ve seen. I bring it with me on my iPad to their site. Show it to the team, get their blessing. CIO walks by in the hallway, our champion stops him. Calls me over, and has me show it to him. “This. I want exactly this. What will it take?”

I have heard something similar to that from a C-suite executive exactly two other times in my career.

Wrapped up the trip. Had the revised proposal in our champion’s hands within the week.

Silence. For six weeks, I didn’t hear a peep out of them.

Finally got one of the rank and file guys on their personal cell phone: “Oh, shit. I forgot you’re not down here all the time - no one told you? (CIO’s name) got relieved of his duties. Apparently he was using his budget to buy laptops for his wife’s school district.”

“Fuck. You guys ain’t buying anything anytime soon, I’m guessing?”

“I’m pretty sure we need forms in triplicate to bug a box of pencils right now.”

And that’s the story of how I came in under 50% in year 2 of selling, because I had nothing resembling a backfill for this massive upsell that I was sure would close.

As another colleague told me later in my career: “Constantly watch out for the guy who’s gonna sucker punch you on a deal. There’s always at least one.”
