Job Hoppers WYA

We work in sales so obviously we are checking out those LinkedIn "Job Postings" likely every 6 months. I was wondering if I can get some advice from some of y'all?

I have been employed by 3 different companies in a year right out of college and I am considering making a switch again. I worked as an SDR for about 4 months right out of college before being poached by a former boss from one of my internships. He set me up with a very enticing offer at a 3d printing start up skipping the SDR stage and going directly to AE. I worked there for bout 8 months and had success but hated every minute of it (good product-terrible management). I went back to the company that I interned at as an SDR and have been here for about 3 months and I'm getting burnt out. All of these jobs have been in the engineering and manufacturing space and I really don't find it as interesting as I thought I would, perhaps I just need to find something new, but am worried if I keep job hopping I wont get hired anywhere.

I want to know if someone has any advice on if I should stick around, get another sales job switch careers (kinda hard cause I am a communications major lol...) Never the less any feedback is greatly appreciated.

My personal advice is to pick one, stay there until you break out of the SDR role into an AE role, and then go wherever the hell you want, other than manufacturing it sounds like :). Typically 2 hops is explainable, more than that can be tricky.ย

Burnout is real, especially for SDRs and ESPECIALLY during covid. Take time to focus on mental health, I found breaking up the day and taking a walk and setting micro goals helps a ton.

First off, there's a lottttt of options being a communications major- you just have to do a little research but truly, world is your oyster.

Secondly, I do find it as a red flag UNLESS there's good reasoning to why you left in which some recruiters don't give you the time of day to find out.

Lastly, talk to your current manager about feeling burnt out. Maybe it's some lifestyle changes that you need to make and not the job itself. Ask about expectations and make sure they're clear then look at your priorities. If they don't align and you can't fit to make it work, sales just might not be for you and that's fine!

As a job hopper, whatโ€™s your story going to be for why you left every one? Ive been with 4 companies in 4 years and I have a very legitimate reason teeโ€™d up for when Iโ€™m asked. Company 1: screwed me out of 12k in commission by giving away a project I previously had set the company record for Company 2: Director was fired 1 month into my tenure and never replaced which made my personal growth stagnant Company 3: I signed on to sell one product, I was very good at it. After a year I was transferred to another product and I voiced my displeasure with it. In 2 years, I reported to 9 different managers. Happy at company 4 now but Iโ€™m sure you get the point that youโ€™ll need a story more than โ€œI was boredโ€ or โ€œI hated managementโ€ Good luck!

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
Personally, I wouldn't hire you (absolutely no offense intended). You'd scare me too much. But there are places that will. The bigger question is what do you actually want to do?

My other concern is that you seem willing to bounce really quick. We've ALL embraced the suck at times. It's part of the gig.

If I were you, I'd focus on the following:

1) Just stick with something for a while. You haven't even given yourself time to learn to like something. Just try it and see what happens.
2) Determine what it is that appeals to you.
3) Figure out what's "gone wrong" at these jobs. Is it a chance that it's you? If so, what can you change?
4) Figure out if sales is where you want to be. If not, get out ASAP.
5) Focus on life stuff outside of work. COVID made shit like this tricky starting your career. But now you can live life again! Don't look for meaning just through work. If you focus on friendships, hobbies, etc., the work thoughts will melt to some degree.
