Job Transition

Desperately need some advice from some fellow sales savages. For context: currently working as an SDR Manager, on track to become a Big Boi Sales Manager in 6-12 months. (Been in sales for about 3 years, total). Company I'm working for is doing well, team is succeeding, but the comp is lower than I hoped.

New opportunity arises - go back to being a BDR (make more than what I make now) and in a year's time hire a few more BDRs and go back to running a BDR team, while also closing my own business. If all that goes well, could be some major career upside.

Management at both companies seems to be solid and transparent.

My question for you legends on here:

How much faith do you put in growth trajectory at a company 2-3 years out? Is guaranteed comp now more valuable than potential growth later? Would you stay in young culture, or go for tenured sales leadership on an older team?

Have you asked for a raise at your current company? Personally, I would never go back to being a BDR because you may get stuck there (despite what they promise).ย

This. Promises are easily not kept in business.ย

If your existing company increased your comp, would you rather stay there? Have you asked them for a base salary raise or better comp plan?

Yes, it was denied on the basis that the promotion schedule would get me there in 6-12 months. Also haven't been there for very long, so I get that piece

None. Do not do that. I repeat - DO NOT DO THAT. That would be a mistake. Stick with the big boy sales manager role or even as a BDR manager and move from there. You'll get compensated just fine when you jump. Going back to a BDR role is low risk, high reward.

The only other appeal is to move from small market sales to enterprise - so instead of working on a team with $12K deals, we'd be sourcing (and eventually closing) $250K-1M deals. I see your background is in enterprise - does that change anything for you?

No. You'll find it easier to move up the chain with credentials from management than to go this other route. You can move from SMB to mid-market to enterprise over a few years while establishing your management experience without rolling the dice on this other path.
