Junior Reps Only Using Exclamation Marks

I was helping a new rep and we went through some emails they sent. I swear every sentence ended with an exclamation mark.

I am happy they are excited about the product but I don't think this CIO is this excited you are the new rep aligned to them.

I typically tell them a rule of max two explanation marks per email.

But I am curious why is this so common to do?

Less is more.

I will use them in a sign off - 'have a great weekend!', for example.

^^^ This.

Also NO emojis unless you really have progressed the relationship to a much more casual level.

So you are not a fan of the broken heart emoji when getting ghosted?

Only, ONLY, if you’ve progressed your relationship.

Though that would be funny, and in that case, you may have little to lose.

In the beginning, I used to see too many exclamation marks as 'Yelling'.

Like, the crux:

Trust you are well! I'm a BDR! I want to talk to you! Are you available next week, let me know!!!

it sounds like yelling.

It's yelling.

Also a sign of someone who doesn't have a great grasp of grammar and isn't well read.

Yeah, I'm a snob.

Two exclamation mark max is a good rule of thumb! Whenever I read through my emails before I send them I always have to take some out lol I also don't love the '.....' that I see people using in emails. Makes me on edge haha

I think it happens because of everyone getting preached to so much about tonality mattering so they try to find a way to force tone into an email. They want to show excitement and enthusiasm. Instead it looks like a poor grasp of how to use proper punctuation.

That also caused the voice of a sales rep to be way too energetic specially for a 8am demo. You gotta bring the energy, but not be fake

We've created generations of weak people that fear offending someone by sounding too direct or "emotionless"

I’d counter that we have a generation coming on that’s grown up with constant contact via messaging and communications platforms that have removed the formality that we started with.

I remember sending the rare fax when I first started and the level of formality was insane.

It's too much contact honestly. Gives me anxiety.

Maybe it happens cause they're trying to come across as excited but its too much in my opinion. Two max is a good rule (one at the beginning and one at the end of an email for example)

I’m exclamation point and comma drunk. I just sprinkle them in every email. It’s bad.

Thoughts on hiring sales reps based EQ versus IQ? I have hired more on EQ than IQ with a hint of hunger to make more in comms than IQ. What are your thoughts and what would you normally go for?
