Just about to hit $3M in revenue - how should I celebrate?

So I've been working for at my current company for two years now, started as an SDR and quickly grew to account executive.

Never thought I'd do this well, goes to prove that you can learn sales and be really awesome at it. Keep hustling!

What should I do to celebrate the $3M milestone?

Sit down at the end of night, pour yourself a couple fingers of good whiskey. Toast to those sales people who are no longer with us (meaning put on plan), and smile to your accomplishments. Then kindly ask the stripper in front of you to slow down, you'd like to enjoy this.

Depends on what your commission rate is! If you're bringing in 10% of that VS 3% of that, it might impact your decision.

I just had a $2 Million quarter, and I celebrated with a nice Wagyu steak (grilled myself, but it was like $70 for the meat), a new bottle of scotch (Macallan 18 Sherry Cask), and by ordering a new part for my car (True-trac Differential ~$700).

I'm also taking a slice of that commish and paying down my mortgage, as well as donating some a local charity.

Need to flex on a few things you enjoy, but keep your eye on the ball. For me, the ball is financial abundance, so I tend to flex less and save more. Plus, paying down debt and giving to charities makes me happy.

My current company pays me ~3% up to 100% attainment and then 2x that rate for over 100%

When I worked at an early-stage startup, we had a plan that started at 10% and ramped to 16% if you hit 100% of quota.

I sold a few big ass deals there and the payout was phat. It's been hard to come to terms with moving to a more established firm and seeing smaller payout on the big wins. But having a more stable employer and a bigger salary is a nice way to balance it out.

1% sucks, unless your quota is like $10MM+

im a loan officer, so different industry. No boss, no quota, no hourly/salary. Reap what you sew. My average loan amount is $500,000 and i've done just over $10million for the year.

Whew, that's a tough hustle. But there's a ton of upside depending on how fast you can process a loan.

Most of my deals take 9 - 18 months.

depends on the deal, but from actual deal open to close is between 21-35 days. On purchases I sometimes deal with clients for a year before they find a home and go into contract on it, sometimes a day. Refinances are different as the person already owns the home so those can be more immediate with much less of a process.

Sure but you have plenty of bandwidth to actually process on any given day, so you can pipeline those up and get to a great run-rate.

Also, those jumbo loans, bro!

exactly. I built my business by courting referral partners; realtors, CPAs, wealth managers, attorneys and now my phone rings off the hook. I also have an assistant who's also a loan processor which makes my life pretty awesome lol. However, in order to make 100k I gotta close 10million in business. Obviously the goal is to make infinite moneyz, so it can end up being a shit ton of work with how many people are involved on any given transaction lol. also, the stress levels are unparalleled, no one to blame about production other than yourself. I wanna sell tech

$2M in sales, not commission. I wish it was commission.

But I'm in IT Security. Good business to be in recently.

Nice, did you study Comp Sci or obtain other credentials/certifications? What advice do you have for people who want to transition to a sales role in IT Security?

I did study compsci but I didn't get my degree in it.

Most companies in the security space will train you up. But to get in the door you need to have fundamental understanding of the tech space.

It took me 9 years of tech sales to get here. If you have been in tech already, you can ramp up in 9 - 18 months when you land at a security company.

What do you mean by tech space, do you mean SaaS or just general complex sales? I'm currently in the hardware/tech space - we sell industrial 3D printers.

The whole ransomware epidemic has got me interested in the cybersecurity space, especially after reading a few articles on Kurtis Minder from GroupSense.

By tech I mean more specifically enterprise IT, both software and hardware.

Complex sales experience is a plus, but in Security the key stuff to understand is how software integrates together and how data flows in an enterprise network. As well as the processes and protocols that govern it.

It's not crazy hard stuff, but it has its nuances.

What would you recommend for people who want to get into the space? Are there any courses/certifications that you would encourage taking? Or is it a situation where you would learn more on the job vs school/online.

Certifications are more for engineers and practitioners. In sales, you may need to get some company-specific certifications, but generally I would research how enterprise IT works and start there.

The majority of my learning was on the job. With the exception of growing up with a father that sold IT.

1) Great Job! I hope you are being valued at your company.
2) Go treat yourself this weekend, or make that purchase you have been putting off. Or plan a trip for yourself somewhere you have been wanting to go on.

Bloody C-19 kinda making it too much of a bother to travel even with a double dose. But my manager is thinking of booking a sales team trip to the Barbados if we break our quota.

celebrate by immediately feeling the pressure of raising your expectations and keep killing it :D.

Also, idk if you work from home or in the office, but for me buying new work related shit always makes me pumped to work. Get some new monitors, keyboard/mouse, or whole new set up :) OR get a rolex - nothing is more motivating to me than checking the time on my watch and thinking, "it's time to make more money"

Congratulations!

go figure out how make another 3 million in half that time! 😂 set a new goal/milestone to aim for.

I don’t think I celebrated those type of milestones. More like i hit quota or made a Million in x amount of years. Maybe buy yourself a nice bottle of champagne or splurge on something for yourself to mark the milestone.

Again, congratulations and keep up the good work.

Congratulations. I usually set a goal and buy a nice bottle of something. Open it once I hit it and finish the whole thing with the team who helped me accomplish it.

What major actions would you take on month ends and quarter ends to hit your quota and also increasing the logos of yours from your pipeline?

FEELINGS- Your commission is annual (ARR) but the customer paid monthly (MRR) and if there is a churn in the next few months, the company will deduct by increasing your quota and taking the equivalent amount $$ from your quota in the next month.
