Just got promoted to team lead and my manager is asking me to motivate the team to hit their KPI's. Any tips on this since no one likes the KPI chat, including me.

Motivation depends on the people- you likely know them well enough to know what drives them. For me, if I like you- I'll absolutely work my ass off to help you get a win. If I don't like you and you ask me to do it to help you out, I'll purposely sabotage that shit because fuck you.ย 

I find 'blanket' motivational things (IE contests, spiffs, etc.) are the least effective unless you've got some SERIOUS budget to throw at it.

Second this. The most important thing is to get to understand what makes individuals tick. For some it's public praise, for others it is that extra 50 bucks... It really depends on the people you're working with and it's up to you to understand that and make them run though a burning building with you.

Do you know how to run a funnel math session? Write the monthly/quarterly goal at the top of the whiteboard and run the math of how to get there, down to the daily activities?

When I did that for my last team the "why" seemed to click. The daily tasks roll into weekly activity, which drives monthly results.
