Just went public, should I switch roles?

Hi Everyone, I'm an SDR at my company and we just recently went public, my vesting is 25% year one then monthly vesting for 36 months. Based on current stock price i've made a good amount of money.

I'm looking at studying part time with my Job and am considering taking a job with less heavy activity such as customer success or marketing. Based on my vesting schedule, I make the same amount in shares that I do in salary.

So all things considered:

  • I'm considering transitioning to a role which is a little more laid back (CS?)
  • It will allow me to be a bit more flexible with studying part time
  • The salary decrease would be offset by the shares vesting
  • My manager is open to a conversation on this and had mentioned it

Has anyone else had any experience on this in term of horizontal movement?

UPDATE: I spoke with my manager and applied for a lateral movement to another team, my manager endorsed the move and is supporting the application and I have a coffee chat with the hiring manager on Thursday. I've made all the move I can on my side, from what i'm thinking even if I don't get the role I still have a job i'm pretty happy with anyway so no harm done.

How does school play into your long term goals?ย
If you want to stay in sales for the long-term does the switch to CS hinder you more?ย

Just some questions to ponder.ย

My study is something definitely different to sales, but very relevant to the industry (Tech) that will pay off in the long run (circa 3 years time maybe?) So i'm not too concerned in terms of my sales career as i'm not too sure i'd like a full time sales job.ย

I'm hoping that I could move to a position that's a bit more stable where I'm not ran by quota and can transition into a bit more of a lifestyle job that works accordingly with my studies.ย

Congratulations!! Word of adviceโ€ฆ ask them to pay for part (or all) of your school. Specially since it sounds like you wonโ€™t be leaving anytime soon and this is part of your professional development. As for the role, I donโ€™t think CS is less work (def not the case at my company) but what is your long term goal - do you want to stay in sales or do want to apply your degree to something? What areas outside of revenue do you find interesting? Dig a little deeper on what you want before making a moveโ€ฆ and donโ€™t let the sales door hit you on the ass on your way to marketing.

I haven't gone through the same process but I feel you're taking the right step of having convo with your manager.

First of all congrats. Not often we have people who stick it out and get the reward after a company goes public.
Here are some risks you run of sticking around and the advice I have.
1 - Getting fired. Theyโ€™ll say one thing, let you float for a month or two then let you go. Iโ€™ve seen this a million times. The company child everyone loves decides to get a side hustle and take it easy at his full time job w corporate approval. Heโ€™s normally gone in a month or two. Words are not contracts, donโ€™t make decisions off of conversations had.
2 - stock price could go down. The goal is to create value for share holders but shit can happen. If you sell cows and the government bans cows, well the pretty penny youโ€™re sitting on & are slowly exercising to maintain your standard of living is gone in a month. Paired with your new role as a CS and the lower salary, youโ€™re now far under your baseline and in bad shape.
3 - just keep your current role, study at night and on the weekends. Life is short, you live once. Itโ€™s not super hard to do both. I worked full time, had a new born and got my MBA at night. I donโ€™t think I would have been able to support my family if I wasnโ€™t working as an AE during that time and focused on my school instead.
4 - I would take the full amount youโ€™ve earned and maybe find a new role. Bird in hand is better than bird in bush. Youโ€™ll leave on good terms, have your money, be able to find a new job that supports your new focus and be all around happy.
If you find yourself making a decision based on how you hope itโ€™ll turn out, youโ€™ve made the wrong one.
Good luck, think it through and let us know what you decide!

I am amazed that SDRs even get shares.

Honestly the Shares are crazy good, they've definitely got me staying for the 4 year vesting period for sure! I got super lucky as I just joined in December last year.ย

Looking at leaving an AM role at a public company, for a Sales Director role at a start up. Anyone else made this leap?

Just made the jump from SMB to enterprise SaaS which even I'm still shocked about. What's your advice to someone new to this side of the game?

I was hired at a really good start up about 4 months ago for a SDR role that I was told I wouldnโ€™t be in for very long. Theyโ€™re gonna go public in the next year, but Zoom Info reached out to me about an Account exec position. Now Iโ€™m wondering if I should take the guaranteed route to AE or let my shares vest and get to AE at the place that took me. Usually I wouldnโ€™t consider jumping so quickly, but AE is AE.
