KEEP HUSTLING even when all seems lost

For literally the past 3 years I've been chasing this client who has repeatedly done two things:

  • Said how eager they are to buy and implement our product
  • Ghosted me for FOURTEEN MONTHS AT A TIME

It's been demoralizing, confusing, infuriating, befuddling, and humbling after expending every. damn. trick. in. the. book. to no avail.

Well...

Today I FINALLY RECONNECTED with the lady.

Now, naturally this could still go nowhere, but I'm convinced this might be the clincher. We wined and dined a fellow senior staff person at this same org recently – he was able to be an internal champion for us and bring it back up to this gal, so the snowball is rolling downhill once again.

Anyway. Wanted to share a win because S.A.D.N.E.S.S.

I've also got a similar prospect that always says 'Let me know when you can do this'...what he is asking for, we can do, he is just known as a timewaster, but equally, if we got his business it would be a big one. If we can't wine and dine due to being 300 odd miles apart etc, how did you manage to win it and what tips do you have for pushing it along?

Thankfully we were both at the same conference last week so got to take him out to dinner.

Honestly it's just been persistence – the guy shared that this gal who's the decision-maker has been mega overwhelmed the past year, so just needed a good angle for why it's worth the time *now*, even though the buy-in on the product itself is all there.

I've just made sure to continually follow up and drop in once a month to hopefully keep it somewhat on her radar for when an opportunity like this came up.

We used to have a saying in horse sales, “some people just want free lessons”. Meaning they wanted to try the product, be wined and dined, have their ass kissed, but ultimately they would never buy (nor have the budget). If you were desperate, you would endure a decent amount of these because you kept hoping that this time it was different. Even if it was, the actual sale was always a giant fucking headache. Make sure that you’re getting a good ROI on your time. It has value too.

So you're saying "close only counts in horse sales" wasn't a tagline in that line of work?

I kid. Have definitely run into those kinds of jabronis. Thankfully in my industry the only real wasted time is just in the mountain of follow-ups chasing the ones that may never have been really interested in the first place – over the years they've become easier to weed out though.

Since pandemic pushing everyone to wfh, many people are of the opinion that all aspects of businesses (at least for software) can be done remotely. How many of you still believe that persona touch goes a long way to close a sales deal?

You just had an awesome proposal call, but everyone is going back to their busy lives. What do you do to keep that momentum alive, especially over a long sales-cycle?
