Laid off, burned out - what’s next?

I’ve been laid off since January. Early on, I passed on a few offers, holding out for a “dream” role I felt I could land. Fast forward to now, it’s almost June, and after making it to final rounds, I’ve been rejected by those dream jobs. I’ve always been a top performer at big-name companies, so this hit hard. With more layoffs happening, the market feels tougher than ever. I’m burned out, tired, and unsure of what’s next. Has anyone been in a similar spot and found a way through?

There come's a point in almost everyone's journey where they have to check their ego and make ends meet for the responsibilities they have. Been in this situation and the only way out is to keep at it until you find something even if it may feel like a step back

Well said.

You can always bounce out of the role you stepped back from as soon as you find something new, and even scrub it from LinkedIn.

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
I've always been a proponent of taking a job till you get the job you really want. Employers have no loyalty to us, so why have loyalty to them? In my last role, I was there just 4 months while I waited for my current role to make up its mind. The company didn't like that I left them - but I know they would have had no issues with firing me in different circumstances.

Easier to get the "dream job" when you are already employed and/or get a referral. Take a role, spend time networking with other reps at the "dream job" companies, find a way in through warm recommendation.

I am sorry about this. Take some time and be nice to yourself, the interview process and take a lot out of you. Go one a walk, enjoy some time without screens.

Then get back at it.

Not sure how I missed your post earlier. You've gotten good advice. I'm just offering support - this is not uncommon, and this market can be very difficult.

You should have no quams about collecting a check from a non human entity even if its run by humans...these days you look at someone not even wrong and you are thrown away...2 way door and its just business...and no matter how much its elevated on a pedestal, its just a job. Those with careers have to tell themselves daily "its not just a job" yes it is,vand some even pay more than others.

I was in your spot last year, had 2 final round interviews that turned into gut-wrenching rejections because of how much they played me. What happens is that I actually end up getting into the biggest brand name company all because I just did the process the whole time. TBH man, that really is what it is most of the times. Have a process for interviews and a method but so much of this stuff is random. It is like sales because you can have the most promising deals punch you in the gut and not close.
Fast forward to now, I am closing deals and having success at a brand name company. It has its highs and lows. I was unemployed for far longer than you were too so I felt how you did.
In the meantime, do some side gigs to put food on the table, apply to companies you like, treat EVERY one of these companies with decency in the process, and realize that you may surprise yourself at the end. I know I did for me.
