Laid off from Enterprise Role...whats the next move?

Hi War Room,

I was laid off on Monday from Enterprise AE role. Caught off guard to be honest.

Company is small and has offices in US & UK, but the US market has been slow and they laid off positions to focus on R&D (product is 5 years behind the market).

Any words of advice in looking for next career move?

Thanks all!

Would you recommend also making a point of hunting their customers or is that pushing it a little? ๐Ÿ˜‚

I would, especially if you'll be selling a superior product.

How would he do this if he signed a 1 year non-compete?

I would talk to the competitor about it.ย

I had a friend do this. We were at the same org, he left for a competitor, but he signed a non compete.ย

the competitor said they would protect him if the other company took legal action.ย

nothing happened.ย

Unless you are a VP/C-suite and you have key intellectual knowledge i doubt the company will spend money to go after you.ย

If they terminated your employment then the non-compete is unenforceable.ย  ย If your departure was VOLUNTARY, then it is for a maximum of 1 year, and that's a stretch.ย  ย Non-competes are expensive to enforce in all cases, and if you are a sales rep I wouldn't even worry about it.ย  ย If you were a manager or middle management executive, then you may be privy to more critical information, but since they terminated your employment you are good to go.ย  ย

I know a lot about this because I took one of my executives to court for quitting and going to my direct competitor; the only reason I did it was to make an example out of him in case anyone else had similar ambitions.ย  ย And I won, but mostly because he was an idiot and working at both companies at the same time ...go figure.ย  It was in the high court and of such significance and a landmark that it even made it into the law journals for the country I was living in at the time - still cited in many cases there today (not the notoriety I was gunning for but oh well.....). That was several years ago and even back then 1 year non-compete was frowned upon - today its more common to have a 6-8 month only as it will otherwise be viewed as an (overly) restrictive covenant.ย ย

So trust me, they aren't coming after you.ย  ย Its a scare tactic with no teeth.ย  ย ย

Thanks for the detailed response. This gave me the courage I needed to start applying to my previous employer's biggest competitor!

Tech. Tech is firing, Tech is hiring. Rather, go for a bootstrapped tech, they at least have their financial shit together. Unlike many of the funded ones.

What others have said seems to be the best choice.ย  It sounds like the competition is ahead on product so it would be an easier ramp.ย  However, don't let dissuade you from exploring other verticals or solutions you have interest in.ย  I would say be strategic no matter what, look for companies with a wide moat and look to sell to recession proof industries if possible.ย  Cloud and cybersecurity are obviously great plays in today's environment.ย
