Landed first BDR role

The title says it all. I come from an account management/consulting background but decided to get the fuck out of the automotive industry and into SaaS sales. I ended up landing my first BDR role with a tech start-up company in San Francisco with the role being remote. I'll be starting in two weeks and wanted to hear any advice or tips for my first sales role and how to really hit the ground running.

Welcome to the War Room, and congrats on the new role!

Lots of great tips on other threads, especially this one:ย  https://bravado.co/war-room/posts/advice-tips-insights-for-a-new-bdr

Here's my main bit of insight for you: you have 2 eyes, 2 ears, and 1 mouth. Observe, listen, and participate with those rations in mind. You are fresh to the industry and to the role, so be open to learning this game all over again from a new perspective.ย

Congrats! There are tons of great threads here to read through. I would recommend making a word doc and copy/paste all the things you read that are helpful into it.

Thank you! I didn't think to consider scrolling through past threads on this, but I'll definitely dive into it and write down all the good tidbits.

On the first day see how many cold calls you can make.ย  On the next day try to beat that number.ย

Learn the process of successful BDRs at your company. Tweak it to where you can do it in your sleep and rinse and repeat

The phone is your friend and it makes you money. It sounds very boiler room but itโ€™s also true. Also getting creative with email is also helpful

Welcome to the War Room and to SaaS sales! It's freaking awesome and you're going to learn so many valuable skills. Lots of great advice in this thread.ย

I'm 1 year into saas sales and was fortunate enough to get an AE role without having to be a BDR or SDR - though I wish I could go back sometimes so I could have learned and become more proficient in prospecting and cold calling. Oh well.ย

Here's another thread that would be helpful:ย https://bravado.co/war-room/posts/advice-tips-insights-for-a-new-bdr

The thing that's helped me the most?ย

Be humble, hungry, and learn learn learn.ย

- Humble enough to ask for help and seek out people on your team that are better than you, ask them what they did to crush it (look at the top reps on your team).ย

- Hungry enough to keep going after people yell at you, tell you no, completely ignore you, respond to your emails pissed off b/c it's a Tuesday or some other random reason. Keep. Going. Don't apologize for doing your job. Smile and dial baby.

- Learn. As much as you can from different sources. Start with the people at your company doing the best - see point one.ย

Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss. Very easy to implement in your day to day, very tactical.ย

Addicted to the Process by Scott Leese - easy, fast read, very tactical.ย

Check out this Sales Bootcamp by Vendition - this helped me land the AE role I'm in now. GREAT foundation for SaaS sales:ย  https://vendition.com/online-training/

@FrattyGย hope this helps and wish you all the best!

Why the step back with AM experience?

I went from Account Manager (still full cycle sales) in Medical Device to an AE in SaaS.

My AM role was a non-sales role and focused on marketing. Plus, I was only in the role for a year and a half so even though it helped get my foot in the door for SaaS, there wasn't enough experience to land an AE role with no sales background.

Completely fair.

All the best in the new gig, it was a game changer when I made the jump.

Itโ€™s a numbers game. Think of it as if you work at a factory. You get paid for every call you make. The more calls you make, the more money you make.
