Layoff News Causing a Negative Work Environment For You Too?

Anyone just trying to tune out the layoff news and focus on their own thing? It's all people talk about in my office, and I've heard the same from friends. I feel the more people keep talking about it they are distracting themselves and really creating negative vibes.

Tips for dealing with this? It's almost a self fulfilling prophecy for some people on my team who are so panicked by the news and headlines they aren't focusing on their jobs and basically creating a situation where they are going to get laid off if it continues.

I can tell you what not to do - ask them to see the bright side (it it exists in your case).

It almost never works. The ones who want to focus, are already doing it. Maybe find them and join them ?

It was in that moment he knew... he fucked up.....

Eulogy for @TennisandSales

"He really was a great guy and always spoke his mind. He made a racket in the sales world by teeing up the court and serving aces. His ability to read and direct his opponent/prospect really was impressive and sometime his smooth tongue would get him out of the most difficult of situations. His words made him thousands and was able to make quite the life for his family and himself. But, it was two words that brought his demise..."calm Down"... unable to switch off his sales hat one that fateful day, his wife wasn't having it and she shut off his life.... if two words destroyed his life, maybe two words would have saved his life.. "i'm sorry" or "you're right" could have been his golden ticket to keeping breath... you will be missed, brother."

I just focus on my goals and work everyday like I do. If someone wants to express I let them but I donโ€™t react or get involved.

yeahhh this is a crazy thing.

for your self, just try to avoid those ppl at all costs. if you are in those conversations, be the one to say
"hey, we cant control if the company is going to lay ppl off, lets just focus on what we CAN control. its going to drive us crazy otherwise."

A good percentage of the tech workers getting laid off are also getting a FAT SEVERANCE checks. And a good amount of them will land another job in 1-3 months.
So Donโ€™t feel too bad for them. This is actually a blessing for many of them financially.

I try to remember all the resources and good things that this new closing role in FAANG tech brought me. I also remind myself that I have been in startups for over a decade and this isn't my first time on the rodeo and it won't be my last. Go big, go home is the name of the game and that's why it pays so well.

Only thing that helps me, is putting myself in a position where I will be okay if I am laid off. Making sure I have plenty of liquidity if I am let go today and have proof of success to make getting the next role easier.

In the end, if I get laid off, there isnt that much I can do to stop it. Especially if its an entire team/org

I'm just keeping my head down and focusing on my own goals. Eventually the market will improve, and I'll do my best to be a kickass contender for the next opportunity that comes my way, whether thats internal or external.

Put those noise cancelling headphones on and concentrate on your work and not the office gossip.

It's what I used to do back in the ye olden dayes when I was in the office. It worked well for me.

If people are talking about it that much I would say it is because they are indeed worried it will happen to them. Theyโ€™re talking about it as a โ€œthemโ€ thing, but it might actually be helpful for them to talk about their personal worry and anxiety - if you felt comfortable you could ask them directly if thatโ€™s why theyโ€™re fixated on the topic. Once they get it off their chest they might shut the fuck up about it ๐Ÿ™‚

there's a magical thing that happens when you stop caring about the noise and focus on what you can control.

One of the positive things about sales is that we are extremely easy to measure and justify. Keep plugging away and you'll be good!
