Life changing moment

As hinted in a few comments, we had a little baby dude arrive last week. People are not kidding when they say it turns your life upside down.

Operating on less than 3 hours sleep here but couldnt be happier.

Just sharing because i am quite the proud dad.

And after the exceptional care, i am slightly happier with the amount of taxes i paid to the Canadian government last year.

Congratulations. Thatโ€™s awesome.
Lucky youโ€™re not in USA. They start a bill for your baby the second it comes out. Typically donโ€™t even give it a name on the bill but call it โ€˜babyโ€™ and the charges start racking up by the minute.
Take lots of pictures. Get lots of toys. Enjoy it.

I've heard so many horror stories.

Literally all we had to pay last year was $300 for a private room, and if I worked for a larger company then their insurance plan would've covered most if not all of it.

Our bill for first kid was 5,000. Second kid was closer to 8,000. Shit is no joke.

Ouch. Was any of that covered by insurance or was that out of pocket after!?

Thatโ€™s all out of pocket after insurance. Iโ€™m sure insurance paid tens of thousands of dollars.

Dear God. I thought thatโ€™s what you meant but I hoped I was wrong.

Iโ€™d imagine there were prenatal care costs as well

Oh 100%. We had appointments leading up to the birth as well.
And we did IVF. IVF cost was partially covered by insurance. But IVF still cost us roughly 10,000. Pre appointments were probably 2,000.
Total per kid was probably close to 20,000 each. FML

@jefe we had a private room at the hospital, no charges, i could stay the night, private bathroom etc. etc. Im in SK, so may be different if you out east, likely quieter hospitals. Nurse home visits up to 2 months after birth, again no charge and we are out of the city. Could not fault the healthcare in this province one little bit.

Thats insane @SalesBeast. Canada has many issues but the healthcare is something I cant knock, at least in my province. Im a UK expat as well so have always been used to the free healthcare but its that much better here.

Oh nice! Itโ€™s not like that in ON.

I guess they have to make up for the fact that youโ€™re living in Saskatchewan..

haha 100%. So many people ask why of all places to move to i chose SK but its a lifestyle decision. You can live a lifestyle here you just cannot achieve somewhere like BC or ON which makes up for the winters and general bareness.

Speaking with a friend in Vancouver he was saying so many people who earn good money but they never go anywhere or do anything because they are just surviving paying for a place to live.

I would rather have the flexibility to travel several times a year, own a bit of land and have flexibility to afford things i want. One day as I move upwards, maybe i will be able to make that work in a nicer place but for now it works great.

I hear ya, man. It makes sense. I'm 60-90 minutes outside Toronto, was born and raised in the city but it's just fucking insane.

Only way to get a house and a yard.

Congratulations on the birth of your first child!

I clearly remember when I became a new dad and worked in retail sales โ€“ wow, I sold a lot because my energy was totally contagious and my pride was shining through. I was running on a massive sleep deficit just like you, but it didn't change anything as the happiness overshadowed everything else. Yes, it really puts life into perspective. Enjoy it!
