Question
Post

Life question, are you doing what you dreamed as a kid?

Have you started a day thinking oh boy here we go again?

Cuz it has happened to me, and in some point of life i'm pretty sure it has happened to you too, you wake up and remember all they funny things you said as a kid, especially what you said you were gonna do, being an astronaut, a police officer, or a pilot, some people even thought to me a rich salesman, not me personally but i'm pretty sure someone thought abut that.

So where do i wanna go with these, not to make you doubt about your choices because even if its not what you dreamed as a kid, now as adults we may not be interested in that anymore, so what is your dream job? are you working for it? what was your dream as a kid? or dreams if you had a lot just like me?

I'll give someone $100 right now if they can honestly (Santa's watching so don't play) admit they dreamed of being a sales rep as a kid lol.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a Spice Girl, and then a veterinarian. Spice Girls were over by the time I graduated and to be a vet you basically have to do medical school. My heart said yes but my calculus and chemistry grades said girl, no.

My dream life involves no job at all.

I think the people who work without having it feel like work are often in "calling" positions...doctors, nurses, working with kids etc or in something creative like the arts or design. For the grand majority of positions, it'll always feel like work even if you don't mind your actual job.

When I was a kid, I did not know what a sales rep was, but, my mindset was that I wanted to be someone "that makes good money from an office since my dad was a truck driver and I wanted to be different" and that is quite accurate actually.

I actually did live my dream. Right to the point where I got the call to represent my country in my sport in the biggest competitions you could do - but it was after the 2007/8 crash and I didn't have the $50k extra I needed for traveling and expenses. I had to decline the offer, because I didn't have a sponsor step up and I had already sold everything else I owned and maxed out my credit lines to get to that point.

The only thing worse than not living your dream, is having everything you ever wanted - bled for, devoted your life to - offered and you knew that if you could just take it, you had the ability, experience and talent to make to the top of the world........but you couldn't because of something so fucking stupid like money.

I still have that voicemail saved.

I know I'm one of the best at my sport. Still am. I just don't have the money to play properly. I could continue to make a career out of it, but it would be a hell of a lot of work to get shit on by people with more money than you. I took a lot of that for a long time, and I'm so over it.

So fuck them. I'm going to make my own money and go back on my terms. I don't care about the Olympics anymore. I just want to do what I want for fun, without the pressures of winning to pay the bills. If I happen to be national champion or something, that's cool. But I will *never* do it on someone else's dime again.

.........off to make some calls now haha

This is an amazing/ heartbreaking story… I’m glad you still at least get to enjoy doing what you love as a hobby/local sport. I’m curious though. This sounds like equestrian….. and if that’s the case it’s a total money put and the one person I knew who rode had an $80,000 horse that daddy bought her and then she upgraded that thing every year as she jumped in ranks. It was unreal. And I know she had a negative ROI. Same with Barrell racing and cutting horses. If you don’t have the money or if you don’t breed em you’re SOL a lot of times. PS never date a Barrell racer or a rodeo queen. I learned the hard way.

Breeding is an even worse ROI. Ask me how I know.

I was a massive fuck up as a kid/teen, so being able to work a job that pays me semi well and have the ability to grow mentally and financially is inline with my goals.

I don't have a dream job, I have goals that either align with what I'm doing or they don't. Sales is inline my self development goals and the day it stops doing that for me is the day I'll venture into something that does.

Tough one to answer. Even as a teen I realized that happiness wasnt going to come from a job. My goals were to travel, write and surround myself with friends. Your Mom's Man on the Side
When I was a kid I imagined being an engineer working on interesting projects that impacted the whole world. Then I wanted to be an Astronaut (original, I know...).

Then I went to Engineering school and realized how boring that job was in real life. No way am I wasting my days away designing some complex part in Pro E, having it produced, testing it, then going thru that loop 10 more times and hoping it gets designed into whatever my company is pitching it for.

I fell into sales mostly by accident, and am so fucking glad every day that I did.

Lots of complex problems to solve, and I still get to use my 'engineer brain' but in a way that makes me FAR more $$$.

Now the dream is retire as early as financially possible and work for fun on interesting consulting and coaching projects while living in my cabin in the woods.

I really enjoy sales but the tough is that I am stuck and will need to grind super hard the rest of my life which isn't a problem but wouldn't want to be doing this at 50. I have a solid technical background but really hate just working on technical stuff - I think my goal is to focus on raising capital for real estate and other projects. I would really enjoy that that aspect of building an investor network and nurturing those relationships instead of quotas.

I don't think its realistic for me to have been able to dream of my current career as a child tbh

A) I was stupid as fuck and didn't know what business really was
B) the tech I sell (or any primitive approximation of it) didn't exist until a few years ago
