Location based salaries

Sure, the world is opening up. But some companies have now taken the plunge into fully remote options. Was curious if anyone here has experience or knowledge on the salary based on location.

If I am qualified, and you want me for the job but I live in the Silicon Valley, my expectations on salary are probably vastly different than someone from (lets say) Indiana.

Do companies take this in to consideration? Should I expect the same sort of comp base wise that I would get in my area from a company that is HQ'd somewhere with lesser averages?

Most companies are thinking about this the other way "oh, he's in Indiana so we're going to pay him less" or "she's moving to Dallas so we can cut her salary 20%." Pay people what they're worth and let them choose where to live.

Yeah.. it's all ass backwards. I was under the assumption that a company would pay their location average to everyone, then if you happen to live in a city that merits a higher COL, that is taken into consideration.ย

I guess it's a catch 22... do you punish people for living the easy life in the country and reward people who live in cities? Or, just pay all the same and risk never being able to afford those who reside in the tech savvy regions.ย

The company I left told us that if we request to move somewhere new, and our manager+HR+CEO approve it, they would take the location into consideration when it came to merit-based raises during annual reviews. E.g. If I am currently in Boston but want to move to Vermont I would then be considered less valuable due to where I live. Makes no sense at all.

wow... so you finally go an move away from the city for more land, affordable housing, easier/slower pace and they'll decrease your salary!? Sheesh...

Or they tell you that you cannot move to a few states because it's "more work for the HR team and will cost us money." Meanwhile, you have an office for 100 that is completely empty, and has been for over a year...who is wasting more money? Anyways, on a fully remote team now and I'm much happier.

My company doesn't give consideration to location. But I know of many that pay differently depending on where you live. For instance, BDRs in Texas have drastically different pay than those in NY and CA.

It's difficult as companies now have a whole wider net and things may change.

but I do think that even us sales folk forget that often we get paid a certain amount not because we are special, but also based on the market rate and battle for talent companies have to embark on to hire people.

If at some point a company can hire outside of Silicon Valley and get AEs based anywhere the offer rate may go down in a remote world. The SV folk aren't geniuses, just in a more competitive market.
(just using SV as an example, but any big city/tech hub could do)

I agree, but if I am located in one of those larger more tech hub cities and you don't pay that rate... you better be providing spectacular benefits, culture, etc.ย

Which I feel like some (maybe most) fall short on
