And KS just amazingly came through on some unexpected legislation...so normally I'd say it's a wash of a move, but now, IDK.

Just be VERY careful about checking the wording of any relocation bonuses.

I read recently about Amazon clawing back 100% of a relocation bonus when they were let go after like 20 months because there was a 24 month clause. They didn't pro-rate it - they went after the whole damn thing.

It's pretty ridiculous, but totally legal as it's to the letter of the contract. Pro-rated is fair, but a total clawback when like 90% of the time has elapsed SHOULD be criminal.

Moved from NC to TX (DFW) three years ago. Hereโ€™s what Iโ€™ll say, business opportunity here are a lot more than NC. Because of the very aggressive corp benefits programs deployed by the state government over the past 10 years an absurd number of large companies have moved their HQ here, so you cover the territory you should get a lot of viable enterprise ops.

That said nobody should move here for the scenery. Itโ€™s a flat concrete jungle and ridiculously hot in summer and still pretty cold in winters. For everything other than the business ops, Iโ€™ll take NC over TX any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Finally, the government policies here are so ass backwards that defies any kind of common sense. A good portion of the people are batshit crazy, and it is the state with the most mass shootings.

What part of Texas? I lived there for a long time. There are areas that are great, there are areas that suck. That being said, I spent a lot of time in Kansas for work, and most of Texas is an upgrade.

Thatโ€™s where I used to live. Houston is a great place to work, but a hard place to live. A lot of it will depend on your personal situation. There are more sexually oriented businesses in Houston per capita than anywhere else in the US, Vegas included. Crime is like any major city. The weather is insane. Youโ€™ll get used to the heat, and the winter is great. Itโ€™s going to flood, and you will have hurricanes and tropical storms. At the same time, if you canโ€™t find a job in Houston, itโ€™s your fault.

Itโ€™s a very transient city. A lot of people are in houston for 3-5 years because they work in oil, and you have to do a stint in houston to get ahead. This means a lot of people arenโ€™t trying to put down roots.

Houston is the best restaurant city in the US. Hard stop. Only LA has worse traffic. Cost of living is great. The city is very liberal, the burbs are very conservative, take your pick.

Houston cant even slightly compare to NYC restaurants, letโ€™s not spread misinformation.

Thanks, hope you enjoyed my Tedtalk.

Hereโ€™s the thing - I spent several years in NY as well. Houston, post Katrina, is on par with NYC. The reason why I prefer houston is that I can get a table any night at any restaurant. Not so much in NYC

We've seen a huge increase in business and even though most industries are all about virtual meetings construction still has that handshake mentality for some of the bigger companies that are generational.

Yup, a lot of states with no state income taxes just have higher property and sales taxes. In the end there is no way to run away from Uncle Sam, unless you move to some country where they wonโ€™t tax you at all.

On the other hand, real estate is cheap. For exampleโ€ฆTake a look at this home I found on Realtor.com

Nice house, just keep in mind that TX is absurdly big and Bryan, TX is kind of in the middle of nowhere. If youโ€™re 100% remote fine, but if you have to drive to DFW itโ€™s 3 hours, Austin is 1 hour 45 minutes and Houston is 1 hour 30 minutes and thatโ€™s without traffic.

I will make bank when I sell this place, that's for sure.

I also bought at the bottom of the market - and the house I sold to get this one sold recently for more than I paid for this one: 1270 sf for $975K. UNREAL. It was a delightful house, don't get me wrong, but I never saw it as a million dollar property!

WHAT!? $975k for 1270 sqft that is crazy. Tell me thatโ€™s in CA because that is outrageous. Thatโ€™s over $750 per sqft. You build a mansion in Texas for that ๐Ÿ˜ณ
