Looking for advice – how much $$ should I be asking for?

Here's my situation:

  • 8 years experience selling B2B SaaS at the same company as the only true hunter/sales guy going after big deals – I'm basically an Account Executive although they've never been big on titles

  • Bootstrapped startup that's been in business more than 10 years – so I also do account mgmt for about $500k worth of large clients, some general support, and some general training/implementation stuff for individual small clients .

  • Deals are enterprise-level (multilayered orgs, 12-18 mo cycles, lots of decision makers to wade through) BUT the avg contract size is more along the lines of a SMB deal – around $24k apiece on average with a few whales sprinkled in
  • Deal sizes are also largely dictated by company culture though - emphasis has been to sign deals instead of make tons of $$ upfront, so we aim smaller on purpose
  • Again I've been the only one, so I take them from qualifying the lead to signing the contract.

  • Current salary is $83k base with no commission and typically a 5-10% bonus at the end of the year, based more on effort than on quota

  • Going into a salary discussion with leadership after realizing that a single-income household making what I make in 2023 and needing to support multiple kids isn't really cutting it, and also after seeing what other jobs are advertising for LESS experience than I have.

MY QUESTION:

  • Based on what you guys know, what should I be asking for and what does someone with my experience above typically command in terms of *cash* OTE (salary + commission + bonus)?

oh shit your doing all that with no commission???
i would go to Repvue and look to see what Enterprise AE and MidMarket AEs are making in your area.

depending on the data i would ask for a $105K base, keep the bonus the same but ask for 6-8% commission on all new deals

Awesome advice, thanks. What would you ask for on the book I manage currently? Anything on straight renewal, or only on upsells?

So i don’t think it’s unheard of to get 2-3% on renewals. But in your case i would start by just trying to get commission on new deals since you will make more money that way.

Best place to start is Repvue since there are so many factors. But for determining OTE. Benchmarks are 4.0-5.0x, meaning AEs should carry quotas that are four to five times what they earn if they achieve their quotas. (To contextualize, with a 50/50 pay mix, a 5x ratio implies a 10% base commission rate).

But I feel like it changes drastically due to being 90-95% base

Yeah it's a tough one, because initial deals are almost small on purpose to get them in the door, and then they grow pretty quick after that. For example 3 of the 5 clients I manage all signed renewals last year for above 6 figures, two for 3-year deals, and 1 for over $200k.

That doesn't seem like nearly enough for the work you're doing.

But I keep circling back to this: 12-18 mos for $24K deals? That's far too long for that small of a deal. It's unusual to find that much requirement for approvals for so small a deal as well. Why are the deal cycles so long, why so many required approvals, why so inexpensive for that amount of work? And I recognize that company culture is hard to break, but whatever it is you're doing is too inexpensive to support your company for long. There's got to be a way to increase deal size and decrease sales cycles. I cannot imagine floating a business on 10 deals * $24K that take more than a year to close. How?

Good questions for sure. Our enterprise deals are basically done in order to help snap up more individual clients all at once, as opposed to just getting new individual ones through organic sales (Think of it like selling to a state so we don't have to wait for each county or town to sign up), plus we've got a few other verticals bringing revenue from individual customers too, so the company is doing fine financially.

The deal length also has to do with our market into really antiquated and unmotivated parent organizations and convincing them to buy into something that's unfamiliar or perceived as unnecessary by a lot of finance folks. The sales come and the solution is genuinely helpful – it just takes time for them, with the easiest (relatively speaking) way to a signature being a small contract, because we know they'll grow pretty quickly in the first 1-2 years with us.

That last part coupled with no commission/incentive to relentlessly chase after the bigger deals is also why there's the low avg deal size.

Thanks, that helps me understand. That first sale gets your foot in the door, but what does expansion look like? Taking that customer up to what level? How much annual spend do you expect from their expansion?

I think to answer the question you really asked, which was how much, check out Justatitle. There's a solid answer AND there's a reason behind the number that can help you get there.

At absolute minimum 10% of the book you manage so an additional 50k to your base bringing you to 135k base and for the loyalty you’ve shown it should be 150. Then tiered commission. 10% up to 60% 13% up to 100% to goal and 15% on anything over 100%. Also can’t hurt to have other options to show them your market value and that you want to stay but financially it makes no sense if this isn’t met.

I am not sure about the base but our OTE is ~ 1/5th of the quote of which 50/50 is the break up of base/Comm (uncapped)

100k base plus 5 to 6 % commissions in closed deals. Also you might need time to understand the product, so it make take a while to start closing deals, you might want to ask for a sort of guarantee commissions to start

You need to bring in facts and figures to establish what it would take to replace you. As mentioned, Repvue is good.

I’d also look up similar jobs on LI. Lots of states are requiring job salary ranges be posted on the JD so you can cherry pick 3-4 jobs to present to your mngt.

Good luck!

I should mention too - quota has been ~10 new enterprise clients per year instead of a dollar amount.

Base is okay, but a commission structure that rewards your efforts should be put in place.
