Low Ball Package from Recruiters

I am a seasoned AE and always been a top performer and have been in the game for almost 20 years. I get calls and DMs from recruiters all the time and when I engage in a conversation the topic of compensation comes up relatively quickly... I am just shocked when I have recruiters still pitching the same OTE 150/150 that has been around for years. I even had a recruiter the other day tell me that he had never come across an AE that makes the same base salary that I have currently which is total BS. Why aren't recruiters explaining to their clients that they are being shortsighted when they are trying to build a team and looking for closers? After all don't they stand to make more money if we make more money? When are companies going to realize that the product doesn't sell itself?

Lots of recruiters just throw a ton of shit at the wall until something sticks and may just be lowballing you to try and get the highest profit margin.

With that being said, a lot of times recruiters are given roles with comp plans that are way too low and they have no choice but to lowball you and they know they're lowballing you. So they'll come up with ways to talk you down, such as telling you they've never heard of that high of a salary.

I'm often handed roles where I'm thinking, "how the hell do they expect me to find anybody qualified to bite at this role with this low of package." I've explained this to clients and they basically toss out the budget excuse.

So essentially, it's a two-way problem.

Almost all external recruiters earn more money if the candidate they’re placing has a higher base. Their fees are a % of your base (and sometimes OTE) so a lowball wouldn’t make sense?

Just realized you might mean internal/TA which makes sense

You’re correct in terms of permanent placements. I was referring to contract placements in which clients pay the staffing firm a flat rate per hour so the lower you pay the candidate the more you make.

I’m not sure why I assumed this post was referring to contract recruiting when I made my comment to be honest.

I stand by the rest of my comment however and you make a good point with your second paragraph.

You’re quite right, that would make absolutely 0 sense lmao. I saw a post earlier about someone hiring for a 2 year SDR contract that would either get brought on as a perm AE or cut after the contract and maybe I was just thinking of that - not sure.

I recruit both perm and contract which keeps me on my toes - two totally different types of recruiting. Our company does a flat rate of 20% on all first year perm salaries. Curious if yours is set up similarly?

We negotiate the highest % that we can get without gouging the client. Anywhere from 15-40% on perm really

Interesting - I primarily recruit contract, so I’m intrigued with the differences in our companies and industries. Appreciate the insight! Hope to run into you on some more threads.

This shit pisses me off. I'm not looking, they find me, see the plethora of experience, and waste my time. No ma'am no ham no turkey!

When they reach out I immediately ask what is base and plan before I continue any conversation. If they reply with anything other than the answer I thank them then block them. Don't come at me with that bs 😒

Are you in the US? It’s actually illegal in many states to refuse quoting the salary range for a position when requested due to gender equality laws. Smack them with that one and see what happens!
