I think itโ€™s hard to apply a general rule of thumb here. Obviously, no one wants to lie but some gatekeepers can be riding high on their own perceived authority and make things more difficult than they have to for seemingly no reason.ย

My philosophy is, if youโ€™re going to jerk me around because my outreach doesnโ€™t serve you as a GK, then Iโ€™m going to approach you with the same level of faith.

Depends on the lie. "he is expecting my call" vs. "I'm his brother" are way different.ย

Nope. Not sure how lies are ever ok so im surprised by the comments below. There are better ways than lying.ย

Example:ย

Gatekeeper: Is she expecting your call?

Me: no she is not this is totally a cold sales call.ย

Gatekeeper: ok she doesnt take cold sales calls

Me: I agree with that policy and honestly I wouldn't either if I were her haha...I did decide to call you all specifically for a reason...would you mind if I shared that reason with you? If you think its a decent idea maybe you can pass it on to Judy? You know her priorities better than anyone.ย
Gatekeeper 99% of the time: sure
Me: give your reason..email the gatekeeper after with a recap
Me: email Judy with a subject line: Talked to Linda this morning
80%+ open rate.ย

Why Lie?ย

Iโ€™ve tried this and the assistant definitely was not thrilled that I went over her (who cares). But yeah, she was pissed.

Lie if it benefits you - but if you need to consistently get through to the DM be unnervingly nice to the GK, if they're your best friend you'll never have an issue getting through and sometimes they give you a cell #

I'm of the mindset that you should Never have to lie if you can properly utilize the phone.ย  I always speak politely, but slightly brisk to the gatekeepers. I realize this is not the recommended way, but I've found if I sound slightly irritated when they ask my name and I project authority they assume that I'm meant to be talking to their boss.

If you are worth your salt you should be telling the intended recipient that this is a cold call anyway.

I mentioned this in another post, but a good tactic that works for me is sending an email to the prospect first so when you call you can say you're following up on a conversation- which is a stretch of the truth but not a lie by any means

Sales is like the only profession where this is even a question. Never lie. It's why people don't like us.ย

How do you respond when a prospect says "not interested" right away before you've given them the pitch?
