Mac vs. Windows

So I recently got a new sales job in SaaS, and for my work comp I get to pick btw a Mac or a Windows. I’ve only had Windows computers in my life, but my new job uses Google Suit so we don’t need Microsoft Word/Powerpoint/Excel.

Separately - I also need to get a new personal laptop (my current one is a Lenovo that I got in 2012 that I haven't used in ages), and I’m debating btw. getting a Windows or a Mac for that.

I’m obviously way more used to PC’s, but curious to hear ppl’s opinion between the 2 for both work and personal use.

I never had a mac until I started with my current company but they only use mac so now I do too. Took a little getting used to in the beginning but nothing major. Biggest issues for me are it only had USB-c inputs so I needed an adapter or hub for everything, it doesn't support 2 external screens, and it can really only connect to 2 wireless devices at a time (including WiFi). Surprising for something that costs 3X an average Windows laptop, but I'm not paying for it and I found a workaround for everything.

Appreciate the insight. So there’s absolutely no way to have 2 monitors with a mac? You’d have to use the actual laptop as a screen and then hook up just 1 monitor?

It depends on the mac. Some use a processor designed by apple and they only support 1 external. So yeah, my current setup is laptop monitor +1 small external.

i did the same thing. Ive only used PC for 8+ years then this new job I got a mac because I wanted to see what all the fuss is about.

I have a normal size external monitor. (i havnt tried to hook up 2)

I like how i can connect my iphone to the mac and text from my laptop and stuff haha.

im sure there are a BUNCH of cool things that I dont know about

DisplayLink Manager + a dock. I have 3 monitors connected this way + Duet Display to use an old iPad as a 4th.

Might give that a go if I ever need 4 screens to make cold calls 😅

Was given a Dell Laptop for work and tend to use my Macbook Pro more tbh. Though, the 1 external monitor only is a bit of a drag, I just use my PC as a third screen lol.

I used to work for Apple so maybe I’m biased, but I definitely think Mac is more user friendly and performs better overall. Especially if you have other Apple products. If you don’t need some super special custom setup, I’d say go Mac! Plus, since your company is paying, might as well try it out, no? 🤷🏼‍♀️

PC for work, chrome book for personal. I just need my personal comp to access Google docs to run my budgets and such. No need for a super powered comp.

You should see the very antique HP slimline tower I have downstairs.  It's not broken...but oof, is it slow.  However, it does 2-3 things and that's it.

That’s what I love about my chrome book. It’s super light, can run the gsuite and I can read articles on it and that’s about it. What else do you need?

I use a mac for work and I love it. If you want to use dual monitors you’ll need a hub/adapter

PC for all and android for phone - as far as actual business laptop, I've used both and time and time again I prefer the PC option. Only reason I'd ever think the Apple route makes sense if you really like having phone and computer completely sync'd.

Same here, PC/Android user for life. I've used iphones for work and understand their place in the world, especially for security purposes (closed ecosystem) but if I had the choice I would always stick with PC and Android for the customization and massive third-party app/support factors.

Mac FTW. The Microsoft suite IMO is also absolute shit compared to GSuite. I have worked on both but that’s just my opinion 🙃

I've always used Macs since college so am a bit biased. But I think the UI is far superior and they last forever without getting buggy or wearing down the battery life.

I switched to Mac a few years ago and there is no turning back. It is significantly easier to use once you're used to it. The computers themselves last longer. Everything integrating (computer, phone, tablet) is incredible. AirDrop between devices is a god send. As someone who went to school for software development I was a big PC guy. Outside of the dev world, Mac is without a doubt the way to go and I wish I hadn't fought it for so long.

Wow, I’m about to start a job that’s all Mac. And while I like mac and have used them as my personal laptop during college, this 1 external monitor shit is ridiculous. I really hope mine supports two monitors, that’s an integral part of my desk setup and overall workflow and is a ridiculous thing to have a limitation imposed upon

Windows/PC since that was all I was used to after 21 years in the Navy. Most everyone else (non dev types) at my company uses Macs but with G-suite no issue sharing work with them. Plus, you can even port your Gmail into outlook if you want to keep it similar to your previous ways.

Team apple all the way. I was a very stubborn Thinkpad X1 user and pixel phone die hard for years but switched to iPhone and Mac and never looking back. M1 laptops are amazing and battery life is hard to beat. Ecosystem sync is great. Took some getting used to but worth the switch.

Mac for work, primarily because I never have issues with it. It just sort of always work which is great when you have to present and do demos. I used to have PC for work and can’t count the number of times I have computer issues right when I had to present to a customer… super annoying. That practically never happened with my Mac. For personal computer I just use a relatively cheap PC.

Mac for sales work just seems a bit strange to me..

Had a MacBook in university along with a PC Desktop and liked it, but I feel like I can't really troubleshoot in MacOS

Honestly it was 13+ years ago, so I don't fully recall and had no TRUE issues, but I've been using PC's since Windows 3.1 so it's second nature.

I enjoyed the learning curve as it was like getting a new toy, but things like not being able to see all the different consituent elements of a program, like the .exe and everything else, just felt limiting.

Do you have any other iDevices?  If so, get a mac.  The interoperability is amazing.

Example: If you have an iPhone and a Mac.  You can copy something on your phone and paste it on your laptop.  That alone is worth it for me.

I've on the Mac party bus since 2012 and had to use a PC at my most recent gig and it was so painful. It's hard to go PC after using a Mac.

It will be a struggle at first due interface nuances on Mac iOS vs PC, ie keyboard shortcuts, Microsoft Office UI and accessing applications. But everything is so much better! The keyboards, trackpad and overall performance are worth going thru the transition. Check out YouTube for videos on the differences so you can anticipate what to expect.

Mac for sure! I used to be a Windows Gal until I used a Mac in college. I bought a Macbook Air in 2011 and never had to worry about viruses or a slow start; had it until 2019 to purchase a new Macbook Air.

If you have an iPhone, it's easy to transfer and sync photos, doucments. One thing I don't like about having a macbook is that if you choose to use non-apple products with it, you usually need to buy an adapter.

They both suck ass, but Windows is the lesser of two horrible evils. Somehow. Rule of thumb has always been Mac is more for designers and creatives and Windows more for business folk. Have not used any MS Office products for years, and hopefully will never have to again. Good luck.

Windows, but I’ve recently been traveling only with an IPAD pro, which has been different and nice. I don’t create a lot of content anymore these day - so it’s prolly easier for me
