Management Promotion

Who minds sharing their experience with their first sales manager position? Were you promoted into it or did you get hired by a separate company to fill that role? Why do you think you got the role? Were you happy for the switch?

I had to switch business unites in my current company to get my first "team lead" position.  Looking back, I ABSOLUTELY wasn't ready for the position, but I was obsessed with "growing" in my career.  Once I was fired from that gig, my next two stops were pretty standard, I joined as an AE, and eventually was promoted to TL, Sales Manager, Director, etc.   Eventually, I was given the opportunity to build my own team as a CRO - had to go to a different company for this opportunity, and since has been a ton of fun!   Before you take that leadership position, ask yourself.  "What's my process? What do I do, that has allowed me to be successful selling my product/solution?"  If you can answer this question, you are ready. If you can't, go back and figure it out.

New company. Management roles were hard to come by so that was my only option.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
@softwarebro and @CuriousFox - Very interested to hear more. A new company gave you a shot at leadership when you hadn't done it before?

I made that sound too easy. Company was a start up and I was hired as an AE with a clear track to management. I was the only sales person and killed it. Within 9mo I was promoted and hired 2 AEs. Rest is history.

Manager, Outbound Sales
Got hired externally from an enterprise individual contributor role to director of sales.

I got the role because of industry networks and the niche expertise of the industry experience i had.

wouldn't trade the switch for the world.

New company. I think 2 things helped me get the role: 1. Successful track record selling into fortune 250. 2. Deep understanding of the market / competitors

I was promoted into the role.  Know what you're getting into, though.  Higher floor, lower ceiling.
