Manager Reading Slack Messages

Hey Fellas,

Does anyone else ever get the feeling that their manager reads their slacks, or am I just paranoid? I know they can see what we write, and your probably thinking they would only use that capability for HR purposes, but if you were a manager would you want to see what your team was saying about you?

I swear me and my buddy would criticize my manager at some points over message because of some of the ridiculous shit he pulled, and then it was like he'd immediately call us or message us over slack, almost as if he knew we were talking about him. Horrible manager in the first place but does anyone else feel this might happen to them?

No marketing, mayo isn't an MQL
They definitely have the ability to see all your messages.ย

Don't post anything in a work issued account that you aren't happy with them seeing.ย

I usually set up a WhatsApp group with the other sales peeps.ย

This. Assume that the company reads everything sent from a company resource (phone, email, messages) and operate accordingly.

Before Slack, at my old job they used Gmail with Gchat, we learned quickly that they read the messages we sent each other because when a person left they went through them.

Once they got slack, I would message only for work purposes and have a separate group chat via a non-company groupme or just on our phones.

There's a way for them to see your messages, and for you to know if they have that function turned on, if you google it.

I use Instagram or LinkedIn to chat with people I work with about non-work stuff or to complain about work stuff.

I sure hope they aren't spending time reading my slacks, if they are then a) I'll probably get fired for stuff I've said on slack and b) they have too much downtime.ย

Yeah best to go text thread. It's terrifying to think of what people would send over Teams at my last job.

Really interesting... although kinda messed up.ย ย

โ€œTheir culture is all about transparency and giving feedback,โ€ says one outside observer with knowledge of the situation. โ€œIt would make sense that there should be no need for private conversation.โ€

I don't even know where to start with that

I try to keep everything PC and work appropriate in slack. That being said, If I was a manager I would never read my team's messages... People say things...I wouldn't want anything to cloud my judgement

Not too sure on Slack, but if they read what goes in between us in Skype and Teams, we would have all been fired a long time ago

At an old job I had, management auto syncs all email for the 1st 90days so they get 100% of a new hire's email communication.ย

I can see monitoring Slack, but for some reason email felt like a much larger intrusion.ย

This is a good article that talks about how they might be able to read your messages:
