Managers that have never carried a bag

Right now, I'm no longer reporting to a sales leader, I'm reporting to a COO who has never carried a quota before. He has business experience, but never been a sales rep doing true outbound sales, especially in tech/B2B.

So, my question is this: could you take his advice serious if he's never done the sales grind?

My VP somehow was hired and almost has literally negative enterprise sales experience if that is possible. Dude is so out of touch we actively try to avoid bringing him into any customer facing scenarios. Everything is taken with a grain of salt, and no one takes him seriously.

According to our sales ops team off the record: "we acknowledge he is a huge miss-hire, but he is so low on the totem pole of issues we need to fix he won't get replaced any time soon."

Recipe for disaster. In my opinion. An org needs a sales leader. Defacto youโ€™re their only hope

Doesn't sound like a solution that will pay off in the long run for them. While you're probably not going to get any great sales tips or problem solving from him, everyone has something to teach you. Sometimes good stuff you learn from them and sometimes you learn what not to do by watching them.ย

At the worst, you can pick his brain to learn more about his experience approaching buying decisions and maybe get him to work over his network for you to see if anything shakes out.ย

How did you end up in that position? Do all reps report to the COO?

We were reporting to a player/coach but then this operational guy is in the picture now and "helping" us.ย

Yeah, this is a show of pisspoor change management. Are there plans to hire a true sales leader?

If a coworker says "this is the best sandwich ive ever had" and then proceeds to leave his desk for over 20 mins, fair game to take a bite of that umanned godsend of a sandwich?
