Marketing is ruining my life - a cry for help

What do I do? I feel like I bitch non stop to the owner of our company about our marketing manager. This dude has an ego bigger than our building. He is constantly messing up the details (dates, spelling, grammar) and doesn't respond to my emails. I feel like he actually hurts the sales team. How can I work with this clown? Also, why doesn't anyone else care?

Based on what I read in the comments it sounds like your best route is to create a paper trail and show your boss how horrible this marketing manager is at his job.

What's the role of marketing majorly at your org? How is your senior team on dealing with prospects?

Please escalate to the fullest to make sure he responds to sales

We're a smaller company. Originally, he started as someone who made marketing collateral, updated our website, social media, etc. Then he has now started claiming to be able to run our SEO and "drive new business growth".

Even if you don't have any advice, I would like to know if other people experience this because it's making me feel crazy.

I know we always joke about marketing ruining the lives of sales but I've yet to be at an organization where that's the actual case so I don't know if I have feedback you'll find helpful but I do know that working to improve the relationship between sales and marketing can only improve things no matter where you are.

I'm a big believer that there should be collaboration between sales and marketing. Collaboration will lead to better results.

In regards to your issue, I wouldn't complain to just complain. If you are going to bring it up (which I think you should) be sure you have examples of what is happening. Come prepared with real things that are happening and examples of it happening. For example, show all of the emails that are unanswered and all the grammar / spelling issues.

I am definitely complaining on a case by case basis. Not even really complaining mostly coming from a place of concern for my financial wellbeing. Definitely solid advice though

I second this, and would add - "make it constructive criticism". No-one wants to listen to people bitch and moan. At the very least ask the questions like "how can we avoid this?" or "how can we make it better?" and have a few suggestions of your own.

- perhaps he is already a grown up which you can't really "change" as a person
- he might be tied closely to the companys' C-suite / Owners - which gives him the "hypothetical privilege" (in his mind) to act yolo
- there is this intangible bad weather in between you two which both of you are trying to fight in a wrong way - pull him in for a coffee or lunch and put the shit on the table - tell him that it's no way this whole thing can go far - try to understand his inner why of all his set of crap behaviors and help him to get on the right track.

What is marketing doing specifically?

An example... we put together panel discussions as a way to get prospect contact info. The panel was scheduled back in April but he went with a machine based streaming platform and his computer rebooted in the middle of the intro for updates and it crashed the entire discussion and we had to reschedule ( we had 4 CISOs on, very embarrassing). By the grace of God we got them to agree to reschedule and subject themselves to humiliation again and he doesn't send out any reminders, calendar invites, etc to people who have registered until this AM. ITS TODAY. Then the calendar invites have the old date on them. He doesn't respond to emails, doesn't spell things correctly and takes it upon himself to send mass emails on the sales team's behalf that look like shit.

This is what I would refer to as active damage. I'd bring this to the CEO asap.

The CEO thinks I am being overly critical. Says "no one is perfect". I've complained and pointed out so many mistakes that I can't anymore without making myself look like an asshole.

active damage is the perfect way to describe this. I'm frustrated because why do I care more about someone's business  reputation than marketing?! or the owner?!

I've been there--and as soon as I switched from "bitching" to my boss to displaying concrete examples of how the Head of Marketing was a bullshit artist is when the change happened. He was let go after the CEO (we were about 200 people) started to see how badly our webinars and event production was declining.

basically no. The worst for me is the typos because I think it makes us look so shitty. I told him yesterday that I am always available to proof read anything he needs to give him a second set of eyes and then he sent an email blast out that had some in it. *facepalm

Ah yes, if that person is really tight with the higher-ups, they have complete blinders on.
My team once had a real issue with someone, but it was the VP's son-in-law. So there was nothing we could do.

Forward the terrible content a few levels up. Start a fire. Burn it down. Sure, you may lose marketing content, but who cares?
