Medical Device breaking into Tech Sales

I have been in medical device sales for the last 11 years and have been trying to break into tech sales since February but have not had much luck up to this point. I have a great resume (President's Club, consistent quota achiever) and have sold into major healthcare systems in the greater Houston, TX area my whole career. Throughout my career I have sold procedural devices ($5K - $10K/case) and capital equipment ($250K - $1M+) and owned the entire sales process from start to finish.

I recently interviewed with Twilio for a Mid-Market AE position but the recruiter told me earlier this week they are allocating all new headcount to their Segment division so they would not be moving any further with my applied position. Earlier this week I spoke with some employees at Samsara, sounds like a good company and I get a referral for a Senior AE position.

Does anyone know of companies that are open to interview successful medical device reps that are looking to get into tech? Any advice is welcome, thanks in advance!

If you've got a good resume and know how to run a territory and process you should be able to apply anywhere.

Absolutely. Med device folks actually have a leg up so to speak from the in depth training they go through.

I agree, and I have applied for a lot of positions....only to not get an initial interview.  I am confident that if I can get an initial interview I will be able to communicate my experience and success.  It's proving to be harder to get an interview without a referral or insider knowledge.

I'd suggest:

1) upload an anonymous version of your resume for us savages to review.

2) reach out to AEs at companies you'd like to work out. Most are willing to give you 15 minutes to give you perspective. Plus most have referral programs so as long as you're not an asshole their greed will motivate them to refer you.

I would look at healthcare tech startups. A buddy of mine I worked with in medical just got a role with a startup in Seattle by leveraging his experience in med. I’m noticing a lot of these healthcare startups have a lot of younger people with no actual experience in med device or healthcare. I would revise your resume as others have said to reflect the knowledge and expertise they would be gaining from hiring you.

Highlight IDN/contract work you have done, your total understanding of the space and how to launch a new product as well as your win rates with getting new doc users. I guess that only applies if you’d be interested in healthcare tech.

Off subject, but I also think a lot of these tech companies are clueless as to how valuable a successful med device rep is.

Duly noted.

Yes I have interest in healthcare tech, as it would be an easier transition, but I am pursuing opportunities outside of this space as well. The total addressable market in tech sales is one of the multiple positive changes from med device that I'm looking to take advantage of.

Its important to make sure your resume has plenty of the same words the Job Description has - especially industry buzzwords.

There's a great site - jobscan.co - which can help with the analysis between the two.

Food for thought: Twilio did decide to focus on Segment headcount for new openings, but people are leaving and backfills can still be hired. If you want to work there, maybe mention to your recruiter that you’d like to be top-of-mind for any roles that may open up because someone left.

We are on the same page, mentioned this as soon as she told me the current situation.

It's time to tap that network. I made that transition because I knew someone in the finance department; even with our connection on LinkedIn, we hadn't talked to each other since high school... That's right, talk about network.

Find someone that looks like that have a reputable image at a company you're interested in. Someone you've known or know, and ask if they'd mind answering a few questions about the company.

If you sell yourself as reputable, they'll refer you directly. It's no secret that companies hire or at least interview solid employees referrals. They're out there, get after it.
