Mentors in sales

Do you think having a mentor would help you in your sales career?

If you had a mentor, what would you use them for? Would it be everyday advice, progression advice or career advice?

I'm lucky enough to call my mentor a peer these days, but we still talk weekly about the game.  Funny thing is, I didn't realize he was a mentor at the time, because I was younger, foolish and caught up in my own ego.  Keep an eye out folks, mentors are everywhere!

My sales mentor is the guy I set up meetings for while an associate. I'm lucky, he still answers my questions and gives me his time even though I've moved up. I prefer going to him over my manager.

Definitely helpful 100%. There is something to be said being thrown into the fire and figuring out stuff on your own, and I definitely did a lot of that. But sometimes you just need some validation on how to approach certain scenarios.

I've started to direct some of my questions here instead of to him just to maintain that relationship and not wear him out. This is turning out to be a great place to crowd-source information. So if you don't have a mentor this should serve as a good resource for you.

Love this @MrWindsor I think it's always helpful to have someone outside your organization, personally.

I have a mentor and I think everyone should have

I have a mentor and I mentor folks and have a few relationships like LordBusiness mentions (though I'm not a CRO).

It depends who you are and what your skillset is, for me my mentor helps me not get over my ski's and tells me when to slow the fuck down. Usually I need to get told I'm a worthless replaceable POS. But I've got more than one and they serve a different purpose.

I've also found mentoring other folks is super valuable to me because I have to reflect, learn, and really think about why they are successful or not so successful. And how their actions let to a situation.

100% - mentor can be huge for your career growth. Luckily my mentor was my EAE so we would set time aside in weekly meetings once a month to discuss growth, career path, what else I can do etc..

I still talk to him now and have a strong relationship to ask questions or advice now that we are piers. To another person point, it is always great to have someone outside your org as a mentor as well (shout-out to my Dad).

& he taught me what a good mentor looks like so now I can (hopefully) pass the advice he gave to me onto people coming through the system.

Just starting out but my company assigns a mentor to new SDRs. It has  been good and I am now a mentor to other SDRs. I know Scott Leese is trying to figure out how to do Mentorship at scale over at his new Sales University gig.

I think it helps those who actually put ego aside and want the help.
