Microsoft lays off 10,000. Who is next?

Damn, just read that MSFT is laying off 10k. After Amazon laid off 18k, Meta 11k and SFDC 10k I cant help wonder what tech giant will be next? I'm praying for all of those impacted, and hopefully the War Room community cant lift up anyone in need. My company is hiring (though at a slowing rate), so if anyone is affected wants to DM me I can look into potential roles.

Good luck out there ya'll! Its challenging times like these that will make us stronger.

Thats a good question, I dont think that has been released yet. I did read that the Azure segment has been performing well, so I assume their sales org is safe but who knows about the broader MSFT sales teams :(

I have inside skinny on Amazon and MS - they're letting mostly people go from unprofitable products and services. There was an entire UX team let go today at Amazon that design the kiosk interface at Amazon Stores. Everyone working AWS is safe. Same with MS - no one from Office or Xbox is being let go. If you're working for either and you're not selling anything under the product types below, you may be in trouble.

- AWS (amazon)
- Prime Video (amazon)
- Azure (ms)
- Office or Biz Software (ms)
- Xbox (ms)
- AI (both companies)

They are both also letting go of a lot of internal HR and recruiter talent.

I don't think any of this is because of some fear of a recession - these companies made more money than every over the pandemic. This is because much what WFH has shown is that they need LESS middle management and more ICs.

If you manage 4-7 people on a kooky product that makes little money for either company, I'd say its time to start looking.

Crazy... at this point, I'm just wondering if these companies are just laying off people because they are following the "trend"

could be they do not want to stand out. On the other hand I think money was too cheap and thus there is some fat to be trimmed (respectfully).

Agreed. I had a change to cash out of a small start I worked at a while back through a secondary round at a stupid high valuation recently and I chose to leave about 1/3 just in case they made it. Wishing now I just took it all. Their valuation has since halved

I'm soo happy I did not jump companies 6months ago. The recession was the reason i did not risk it.

Same, could have doubled my base. But wasnt worth the risk with a family and I am always skeptical of the true OTE at a start up, where as I have a record of exceeding mine at my current job

Who's next? Who's looking to bump that stock price up? Thats who's next. Or the classic, sheep mentality, because everyone else is doing it. How many companies now have firing quotas? Hire you just to have someone to fire when supervisors ask subordinate managers, got any dead weight to get rid of? Except we're all the dead weight, with lives. Or another number to crunch. But that's business. Fins up!
