Mock Cold Call with CEO - Second Interview

This will be my first BDR role, quite keen on getting this right. The company provides PaaS, outsourcing sales for other companies. I have a mock cold call with the CEO as my second interview, and am tasked with selling him his own company's services. It's a bit different as I am not selling a product/software, but convincing them to allow us to take over their sales operations. Could I get some tips from the War Room on how to nail this? Below is an excerpt from the hiring manager explaining the call.

What we want to see:

  1. Opening: introduce yourself & say you are calling from Company about/in regards to our "x". Remember it's a conversation!
  2. Discovery: Use open-ended questions about lead generation/ business development to learn about the prospect, the business, current operations, pain points, objectives, etc.
  3. Positioning: Based on the information you are presented, position our services as a solution or opportunity.
  4. Close: Ask for a follow up 20-minute meeting with our team to learn more.

Cold call tip - ask questions and get the prospect talking to create rapport and identify pain points.

A mock cold call with the CEO?

YIKES.

My first thought is HOW presumptuous, my second thought is how freaking micromanaged is this company if the CEO is jumping on interviews with BDRs lol.

I'd go a little off-piste and out of the box + a wee bit of humour will probably go a long way. The CEO has probably heard the same dribble for a long time!

Do research on the different forms of outbound lead generation and ask how X company currently does it, tick off what they say on the checklist and mention how you are able to do Y instead.

But definitely just remember it's a person on the other end of the phone and not a barbaric brute that hates you.

Key selling points for a CEO or sales leader to buy outsources sales services. 1) save money (recruiting, supporting and managing sales is expensive as F) 2) save time - recruiting, supporting, and managing sales takes a huge time commitment. On average an SDR service can ramp in 1/3 of the time and 80% of the cost of an internal team. Objection/concern. - can outsourced agents represent my brand/product good enough.

This is lame, and the company's sales culture might not be great if a CEO is getting in the weeds of a BDR hiring process.
Role plays in general are nice bc you can make up things to control the direction. "I spoke with <person/position> at your company, and I understand you have <certain pain>
Advice for cold calls in general, I never position on a first call. "We have helped <competitor> in this space with <made up stat>. We might be able to assist yall, too." Ask for the next call.
Best of luck. If you need help w finding a BDR/entry-level role -- happy to help. You are obviously resourceful if you are on here. Its been a while since I was on -if DMs are turned on, HMU.

Update: I got the job. Mock call lasted all of 5 minutes and went awful. He asked to just be sent an email but in the review he said I didn't do too bad.

Congrats on the 2nd round. My suggestion would be to have a good response to common objections and ask relevant and meaningful probing questions. They won't expect your be have great knowledge of their products.

Echoing the thoughts of others - definitely strange.

That being said, be a bit different, VERY curious, and try to get him talking about money and the ROI or money saved your services can provide.

This is so lame.  It's how they'll act as a company.  What's your situation?  Are you desperate?

My guess is he's a weird tech founder.  Those are usually where you will find these fellas.  But, sometimes they turn out ok.

My advice, reevaluate your situation... just takes a lot of points away.  Find out if the actual real Sales Leadership thinks it's a good idea.  If they roll their eyes, you're in.

For the call itself...

If you cold call, provoke the hell out of the CEO.  Just go at every fact you have on them and use a provocation style methodology that encourages you to find his emotional pain points.

Sweep the leg.

I always find it to be BS when you have to do a mock call to sell something you haven't been trained on yet. How much time do these companies expect you to invest for a fucking BDR role? Good luck, but I've walked away from interviews where they demand this before lol

"Hi Charlie its Woody from X.  How are you today?"

"We've worked with companies like (Y company that is like them) and (Z company that is like them) who had a great (technology/product/service) but struggled with scaling their sales department and growing revenue past the first small group of customers.

Our business is providing a ready to go sales organization that can ramp up and add revenue within the year.  I'd like to walk you through how we did that for (companies like them) .  Are you available next Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.

Just pretend to leave a voicemail. It's way more real than pretending someones going to do discovery on a cold call.
